I prefer to grind, if it's optional I'll likely not do it. I like being forced to be challenged. I building up a super powerful character than can kill metal slimes with one hit.

Enjoying LR so far. It's kind of...different. No spoilers below, but more about the mechanics of the game.

You have the main quest, which you could just power through to get the story and then move onto NG+, side quests which you pick up in the areas you are at, and then "bulletin board" quests which can be region specific or global. So far a lot of the side quests are "find these items" or "kill this hard monster" and seem kind of... "meh" I guess? But they're how you get stat points (no levels or anything from monsters in this game, so you could theoretically not fight at all minus for mats for side quests and be perfectly fine) so they're required if you want to max out for end-game optional content.

It's the FFXIII lore, so the story is convoluted as Hell (and at the same time, very simple if you break down to the main points). I am interested in seeing how certain things play out.

The battle system is the best in the series, and creating schematics is a blast. Timing and positioning matter A LOT; no more "ravager for stagger commando for damage sentinel for guarding" type of play; weakness are critical when fighting monsters, and a weakness might not just be an element type - it could be pulling off a guard when they attack, or hitting them in a certain position. All and all, it's pretty dang strategic.

I don't use the DLC schematics because they're pretty OP at this point. In my hard-mode NG+ I will end up using them though.

Money is pretty scarce and I made the mistake of buying up all vendor items right away...bad idea.

The "social" aspect of it all is pretty neat; I check out what other people post from time to time and I've uploaded a few things of my own. I talked to the official Square Enix uploader account in-game and got a Tonberry cosmetic.

Whenever I think of grinding, it reminds me of Final Fantasy IV. No matter what a game does, I'll always be a bit more annoyed at the game giving me Rydia at somewhere around five levels below Cecil. I end up spending half an hour or more just grinding out levels around the city (Kaipo?) so she doesn't get two-shot by enemies!

I don't get why they'd make you pay for it... other than milking money from people that prefer the Japanese voices (like me). Although, it's probably not the most egregious, because I'm pretty sure there's a Vita game that charges a ridiculous amount for the Japanese voices.

Thank you Gotham hunter.

Final fantasy 4 may be my most favorite game, so that explains my grinding preferences, xD.

Absolutely hate this game. I put it away and don't think I will ever play it again. It was a crappy combination of Assassin's Creed with FF themes. The battle system was 'OK' and the only think I liked was the customization factor. Hate the clock and the lack of leveling, just quests. After almost 15 hours, I still don't feel like I played an RPG. I seriously think Ninja Gaiden is more of an RPG than this. Bah.

I really liked XIII and XIII-2. Was looking forward to this game, but am really disappointed. Sqaure made a real POS with this one, and FF XV look's to be even worse. Here is to FF XVI maybe being a good one again...

Gonna wait until next month and replay the FFX HD remake instead of keeping at this pile. I have more fun doing work than playing this game.

Bummed. :(

Grinding should be optional.

A properly designed balance is that you don't have to grind to enjoy the main story the first play through but grinding is there if you look for it and you want to do secret bosses , ultimate gear, etc.

Exactly...with skill you could go through Xenoblade chronicles without killing every monster around. To do the really tough stuff and get ultimate weapons etc you have to basically grind it out. You got a lot of quests though that allowed you to skip some of the grinding (unless you were on a fetch quest).

I'm in chapter 2 and I don't feel like I've had to grind at all. I just make sure to find all of the chests in each area, which leads to a few extra random encounters. I'm level 30, which feels about right; maybe a little over leveled.

The reviews (and the forums related to the game I visited and browsed)said that around chapter 6 it gets bad in terms of forcing you to grind and gets repetitive. Some people gave up, some people didn't care. I don't know first hand though obviously.

I'm pretty oblivious to grinding.

My goal in every RPG is to find the first exploitable enemy in the game that gives obscene experience, skill points, wherever, and level cap ASAP, then god mode the rest of the game and not even care about fights.

In XIII for example, the guards in the gold tunnel that drop credit chips, then the robots and bombs in the tunnel when you get to Pulse. In Bravely Default it was the blue frogs. In FF VI it was the invisible guys on triangle island susceptible to Doom using Gau at level 6. In Ni no Kuni its Tokos and 3 x Dinoseros spamming Earsplitter.

Every RPG has followed the tradition of the metal slime and included some rare or hidden monster that appears impossible to kill at first but has a trick and provides a grinders paradise in exp/sp when you learn the exploit. Its always so hard to kill the first one but when you do the 5 levels you gain just make the next one that much easier and next thing you know you are 99.

The original Dragon Warrior I remembered taking FOREVER.

Recently played it again. Hit level 30 cap with 65535 exp and 65535 gold in less than 24 hours.

Metal slimes? Nope.

Axe Knight.

Why? He's ALWAYS there in that one square with Erdricks Armor (no RNG no wandering or waiting), dies in two turns, and the exp you make in 2-3 kills in less than 5 minutes is more than a metal slime and its guaranteed unlike the 30 mins you'll finally get a metal slime only for it to run away. Absolutely DWARFS metal slime exp/hr and is best exp/hr in game by FAR once you can farm him effortlessly.

Play smart = less grinding.

If someone says this game is like Assassin's Creed I sure as hell am not going to play it!

I liked the demo but I'm going to be pissed if I'm "gated" and can't grind indefinitely and be OP.

I'm not quick at all. I max everything and do perfect save files. I average between 100-200 hrs per RPG.

I suppose you can keep repeatedly playing the game as you run out of time, but to what end? It's just fetch-quest after fetch quest. It's like a single player MMO with a time limit. :(

I'll get over this game, but I see a lot of potential here if they had only made it 'right'. Ugh.

I'm over 30 hours into now. About to finish the last main quest.

The time limit really bothered me at first. I failed the very first quest with the investigator because I didn't know it was timed. I spent the whole first day just running around trying to find those four passcode digits. I hated feeling rushed.

After the 4th day, I learned how the limit is quite manageable most of the time. You can farm larger enemies for EP and use Chronostatis to stop the clock. It allowed me to do a ton of exploring.

About the battle system -- Overwhelmed me initially, but I grew to like it. When fighting multiple enemies, there is too much shit flying around the screen and I can't tell what's going on. Backing off the camera angle helps a little.
