So the gf and I are sitting in our living room during a lightning storm. A bolt seemed to hit in the yard right outside the house - with a HUGE crack sound and a big flash and us feeling like we just got hit in the chest. It put us both on the floor. Scared the sh!t out of us - it really seemed to hit our house. Soon after people were spilling in the streets trying to figure out where it hit. I turned on the news and they said "a lightning bolt hit the portland metro area - you all probably saw it and everybody's riled up" or something like that. It's amazing how gnarly those things are that it hit the air above the area and the entire city hit the deck.

Anybody else in portland metro experience this?

No, but I hope people don't think I'm an attention whore for saying this, but my dad was struck in 05 from lightning and thankfully survived with no injuries. He was very lucky, unfortunately he didn't win the lottery ticket he bought though.

Hehe, I mention it every now and then when I get a chance, it's a great way to start a conversation if it includes him in any way ;)

I heard it out in SW. Very loud. We even had a brief hail storm out here.

Yeah we were in our air conditioned bedroom (no central air FTL) watching the sky light up.

We Portlanders are so easily amused.

Why can't we have clear skies, sunny, 75 F and light breeze for the rest of the summer?

You only get to pick one. Win the lotto... Survive the lightning strike. Your father chose wisely.

Because we have to suffer for our excellent weather in the other seasons, such as cold falls, rainy winters, and cold & rainy springs.

No. Thunderstorms west of the Cascade mountain range are pretty rare. THe geography isn't very good for thunderstorm formation.

That is what I am wondering as well. The local news reporting a single lightning strike that didn't set something on fire or damage a building or something seems kind of odd.

I'm sure we've all heard the lightning strike that sounded a bit too close... sounds like a crack that lasts about 2 seconds that actually fades IN. It's fricken loud - how does a human actually survive a direct hit like that ?

We in Florida get lightning all the time. Sends me scrambling because lightning and electronics don't go well together so I just hope and pray that none of my equipment goes down.

It would have sucked though if he had had the winning ticket but the lightning had burned it to a crisp ;)

Isn't he supposed to have super powers now? Like, is he an intellectual genius now?
