Hey got a question. I am wanting to build muscle(not tone just build) and am wondering if it is best to lift less weight more times or more weight less times? Like I said I am wanting to build so that I have a nice cut look. I noticed when I lift less weight more times my arms, legs, ect ace more then lifting more weight less times.

I heard useing less weight will help tone and lose weight. What do you all think?

in general terms, more weight-less reps builds mass, less weight-higher reps tones.....

NeoV is right. Do heavy sets to build bulk. Eat alot of protein in your diet if you are going hardcore lifting.

Well ultimately the excercise of lifting weights sucks for weight reduction anyway (its far too short in duration and all aneorobic). The benefits in terms of muscle growth and thus increased metabolism are incredible of course but the actual weight workout itself sucks for losing weight, so don't worry about that. Your ultimate goal is to build maximum muscle. For that go heavy with not too many reps. Afterall you don't wanna look like the women who are doing 5 lb dumbbells for 30 reps and then with a slight persperation and sigh putting the weight back ;)

That means you are not lifting heavy enough. You want to lift until muscle fatique. On your last rep, it must feel like there is no way in hell you can lift one more time if your life depend on it. Then lift one last time after that. :)

Your muscle grow when you break down the fiber and they repair themselves to be bigger.

Well I don't want to be huge I just want to be nicely cut. Would doing 1 set of each workout as many reps as I can do, build good? I know it wouldnt build as fast as doing say 3 sets of each workout but would it build?

I do 5-6 different workouts.

One is better than nothing. I wouldn't worry about getting huge. You wont change that much from one day to the next. You can alway go back to light weight when you feel you are at the right size. Most people that get huge are either on steroid or got good genes. Most people would have to work *VERY* hard to get huge. Hell, I can't get huge if I wanted to. :(

is periodization the best way to go? ive read in books that says this is the best way to progress strengthwise.. true?

well, ive been doing that for about 6 months.. im only 130 lbs.. i know. skinny as heck. but i must tell you, weight training has made me feel alot better about myself. self-esteem booster. at least im toned and i dont look too shabby shirtless.. should have seen me before working out... literally skin and bones. i dont goto the gym (cant afford the monthly fees). i basically only use dumbbells for weighttraining (around 25lbs each). , might seem like diddly for most but im okay with it. i just purchased some gnc weight gainer and will begin taking that next week. i dont even use a bench.. no room in my house for one. i sorta improvise. ive gathered a few books and mixed and matched everything that deals with free weights in my routine.

You meaning varying the workout? Yes. Muscle has memory. If you keep doing the same thing, it gets better and efficient at doing them and wont grow as much. I usually change my workout every month - different exercise (eg incline db press instead of benchpress for chest, etc...) or light weight/more rep, heavy weight/less rep. Basically, don't get into a routine.

fastz28: yeah. that's what i meant.. i think that's what they called it in the books i have.

have to agree with fastz28, doing any amount of weight training or exercise in general, is better than nothing at all.... i had in the past tried to work out.. after a month i quit cuz i didnt see any results. well, not sure what was different this time. but i persisted in keeping up with an exercise routine, and after a few months, started to notice. i definately noticed an increase in energy level that i didnt have before. good luck sniper. wish you the best in your quest for a toned bod. :)

dakata24, good luck with bulking up. I got started about 3 yrs ago by entering this contest: Body for Life. Now I feel weird if I don't go to the gym. I definitely feel the energy boost after workout. Make sure you eat a lot of meals (5-6) but small portion. Drink lots of water, get adequate sleep, especially after workout. That site has some good info.

I was different. I was overweight, but I now look for reasons to go shirtless. :D It's definitely a confidence builder. Even with shirt on, you feel better because you know you look good!

Someone mentioned earlier about weight reduction. It's true, I weight the same before and after (162 lbs), however, I converted most of the fat to muscle. I looked much better, plus I had to buy new pants (30") because the 32"s are too big!!

Well my arms are good size I use to work out 2-3 days in a row doing 6 workouts and doing 3 sets of each and waiting 3mins between sets. After 2-3 days I would rest a day sometimes 2 and do it 2-3 more days.

Did this for about a year straight. But problems starting coming up like I had to be out of town/work for days at a time and I got use to not doing it and started slacking off till I finally quit about a year. For the past month I have been trying to start back but don't want to do it like I did before. Oh yeah I am about 180lbs.

Kid of OT, but hey, that's what OT is for and I didn't want to start a new thread on this because of the responses it would get. Here's my question, what the heck is the "snatch" in weightlifting? Outside of weightlifting I'm very familiar with the term. ;)

You don't know what the *snatch* is??? well let me enlighten you fellow ATker......

The Snatch is a lift in Weight Lifting.

Its like a *clean* but the bar is not accross yoru clavicle and front upper body well accross the top of your chest.

Basics,

When you go to lift the bar you have a *wide* grip as opposed to the *clean* narrow grip about the length of your shoulder length.

So with your wide grip you go to lift it I won't bore you with the over complications of specific techniques as its going to be confusing if you don't know what it is to start with. Well if you know what a *Clean* is then instead of pulling the bar up and pulling yourself and dropping under the bar to catch it on the top of your chest you drop and pull under but you have your arms straight out. Your arms have to be straight for the lift to be legal and count. If they are bent and then straighten out and the referees spot it, its a foul. So your squating in a *Y* shape. In the squat but with your arms widing out like a *V* shape from your upper body. And from that position you have to squat back up and hold it. That is the *snatch* in basics. Lots more advanced stuff I could type but would be hard to picture unless you actually do Weight Lifting.

I Weight Lift so I know about it. The Snatch is harder to lift then the Clean and Jerk in general....

dam it can't find any clips or anything....

Do 3 or 4 sets for what ever muscle group you are working on that day. With each new set increase the weight slightly. Diet, correct breathing and form are the most important things in building mass. Pretty soon you'll look like AAAAAAnold used to.
