I have an old 4x4 pickup with almost 200,000 miles on it. It isn't in bad shape, but it is pretty tired all around. Since it isn't worth much (it is 13 years old) I've been thinking about what to do with it. I've thought about a body lift or a suspension lift, not because I want to look cool on the street, and not because I would really do much offroading with it, but because I'm a mechanical engineer and I think that this would be an interesting project.

What do you guys think?

Meh...it doesn't seem like you'd use it for anything so whats the point?
 
sounds like a good way to kill someone in a miata. or just about any other non-jackedup car/suv

93 Dodge Dakota 4x4.
It's old and worn out, but everything still works.. It needs suspension and steering components. It wouldn't hurt to get new torsion bars, leave springs and shocks.

While this is true of huge vehicles, the lifts that I've been looking at are 2-6 inches. The average joe wouldn't even notice the vehicles is any higher with a 2 inch left.
 
I get annoyed because I can see around them in any of my cars...

I used to have a coworker with a lifted Tundra, he was a short stocky dude. Definitely compensating... nice guy though but completely nuts on the road.
 
I once saw a truck lifted like.. massively off the ground. The thing that made this one unique? It was running stock tires....

one of the strangest and stupidest looking things i've seen. Something that high up with tires that small..
 
I dont mind functional lifts IE adding a few inches to stuff some bigger tires or add GC, those look nice. Super lifted mall-runners w/ chrome wheels etc look rediculous. If you watch, 9 times out of 10 the guy getting out of those trucks will be shorter than 5'10".

Cool for Off-Roading, Rock Climbing, etc, but I think those things should be banned from the road because their damn bumper is way higher then everyone else's bumper or crumple zone 🙁

Word. Car manufacturers make an effort to keep their bumper levels about equal with each other in the interest of saving lives. A front bumper level with someone's head in the nearby car means a much, much bigger fatality risk in a T-bone accident or similar.

Now that I've said that...

*waits for Ornery to get here and tell us that if we all drove Grand Marquis, this kind of thing would never happen*

Yep... I agree with everyone on this.

Saftey is paramount with this project. There is no reason to jeopardize it.
Keeping the bumper low will be a priority. I'm not looking to raise it a foot or more. I am looking mainly at a body lift (2 or 3 inches) and running a little wider and taller tire on a stock rim, or something very close to a stock rim.

The fact is, that my suspension is pretty much worn out and it is time to do something. If I replace everything with OEM style equipment, then I just have a regular truck with a good suspension that isn't worth the amount that I've put in it for repair.

Oh well, I'm not doing this soon, but it was something to think about.
