Lifestyle choice or disease?

Ya think this guy said to himself, "Yah, I want to eat so much I can't walk across the room?

I'm of the understanding that people that are able to get that big have actual genetic issues that allow that to happen.

Now, there are other people that might have small issues and they let themselves get carried away - those people need to put down the damn fast food and go out for a walk. (But these people never get big enough that they cannot leave their bed and stuff like that)

It's an addiction. Just like smoking. Fatties and smokers are not in control of their actions. Their addictions take control of their brains and makes them do things they wouldn't normally do. That's why it's so important to intervene.

This is just mean. You don't know why the guy is so heavy and he's not here to defend himself.

Of course not, but he did it. As for whether it's a choice or disease, at first its a choice, then when it gets out of hand it's a disease. As another poster mentioned fattiness is like smoking, if you never start it's easy to prevent, once you start, it's very hard to stop. If you don't realize you're overeating early on, and just ignore that you're overweight, you will keep on going down the wrong path.

Is it mean or is it helpful? It brings attention to a serious problem especially in the U.S. If one person reading the thread realizes they need to correct their habits and it improves their life then it's worth it.

I wonder if there was a catalyst... that seems to happen a lot.

already overweight guy/gal experiences an injury/accident that affects their mobility even further, causing their weight to go from really big to not being able to walk anymore big, at which point their mobility is so restricted and their stomachs so large that it's nearly impossible to lose weight without outside intervention.

It's a choice, or rather it is as much of a choice as can be construed from a deterministic universe.

it's a disease which causes the lifestyle choice.

people don't want to constantly overeat or look like the op's pic. something in their medial hypothalamus doesn't work quite right which causes them to choose the lifestyle of overeating.

I understand the addiction to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, etc but not to food. I always expect people to stop eating when they're full. But I guess the addiction tells them to keep eating even when they're full. Weird.

Sometimes the catalyst might even be bad parenting. They overfeed their children. Once overweight, it's easier to keep on gaining than it is to lose weight. Once the stomach is enlarged, the person feels hungry more often than they should. There are also other causes, glandular for example, such as the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism causes a slow metabolism which if left untreated can lead to weight gain.

back when I weighed over 400 pounds, it took a ton of food to make me feel "full" (like, an entire 12" chicken parm sub and I'd start feeling hungry again after an hour or two)... and throw on copious amounts of high-calorie beverages that don't necessarily affect hunger.

a 20 oz bottle of coke has more calories than a healthy turkey sandwich and doesn't make you feel nearly as full.

I'm going to go ahead and guess that house has no basement, and it's just a slab foundation.

That is insanely huge, not just fat, but giant! Look at his hands, they're just hanging there, and even his hands are fatty LOL.

I wonder how much he weighs. *Steve Ballmer* 250lbs? 500lbs? 600lbs? even more!?

I can't help but keep looking at him, and wondering what happens if you poke him with a needle.

That must seriously be uncomfortable. I have just a small belly that started and just that alone I find gets in the way, and I've been working to cut it off. I can't imagine letting myself get huge like that. I don't even think my body could handle it.

As someone who is overweight, I can tell you that my problem is an emotional response to stress. Food is just a comfort.

Stressed about homework, eat a bowl of cereal.
Shitty day at work, eat a pizza.
Depressed that your overweight? What's one more Big Mac, you'll get back on track tomorrow.
Go to the gym a few times, feel great.
Have a few busy days, forget your new lifestyle.
I'm hungry, I'll just get a big mac today. I've been good no big deal.
Shitty day at work, eat a pizza...
...

I'm very well informed on how to eat well and I know how to lose the weight if I really want to (I once lost 70lbs, but gained it back over 5 years when I went to university).

It's not an easy cycle to break out of.

Well... Originally I would have said the same because I thought you'd need like 6000 calories a day to get that big. However, out of curiosity I went to a BMR calculator and BMR for 5'11", 25yo 450# guy is only 3600 calories. When you think about it, it's not that hard to eat 4000+ calories. It's just 4 Big Macs with a side of coke. Of course I'd throw up before I ate that much but bigger guys can eat a lot more and with the right conditioning it is possible.

Now I'm not saying this guy does not have some genetic condition that affects his weight, but I am saying it is possible for a totally healthy guy to get that big just on food alone.

It's not weird. Junk food is extremely rich in calories and is not filling. That's how a lot of people get fat. Face it, junk food is often delicious, people eat it for the taste, but at the same time it doesn't get them that "full" feeling, so they end up eating even more of it. Take a look at the following:

A typical bag is 10oz. 1oz is 140 calories. It's easy to eat one third of the bag, get 500 extra calories a day and get fat fast. It doesn't seem like a lot, but I just went to a generic bmr calculator site, put in my stats and guess what, if I were to start eating 500 more calories in a day I'd gain 80 extra pounds eventually.

how about we don't embed disgusting images, fuckface.

Warning for the personal attack this time. Next time, it's a vacation. Don't like something about a post - use the report post button, not personal attacks. -Admin DrPizza edit: ooops, looks like this IS the next time. See you in a couple days.
