So why do we discriminate against 'useless' threads here at anandtech? Aren't we all useless in the long run?

You die, and that is it. In the long run, noone will even care that you existed. Maybe your ancestors will like living, but eventually they won't matter, either.

I agree. Nobody will even care that YOU existed.

Better come up with something better than this!:frown:

You can do good deads and help people, and then you will be remembered.

Good luck and don't kill yourself.

There is no such thing as morality or good. Only ethics and opinion.

Oh, and I will kill myself if I darned well please. "Life should not be a sentence."

<<You can do good deads and help people, and then you will be remembered.>>

Doubtful.

If you want to be remembered by helping people, you must do something truly extra-ordinary if others will remember you. Odds are that you'll fail while trying.

And once this population of which you helped some people, dies out, nobody will remember you. Anyone knows the names of people during the times of the Roman Empire who helped the sick and weak?

Their names are lost for eternity and nobody will ever remember them.

You were the one that thought worshipping Satan was cool right?

No wonder you life is a piece of brown runny material. You don't have many friends do you?

Better stop worrying about how bad life is and live it up, because the after-life party won't be too fun for you:eek:

antiAbit:
Ah, I was just screwing around. I was trying to spark a deeper questioning, but that never arose. My point was "Why is Satan supposedly evil?" Noone got that far in the discussion. It was pure silliness. Everyone stuck to their preconceieved notions.

My true philosophy is pretty nihilistic/hedonistic. Nothing matters. Just make yourself happy. So making myself happy means you should insult me and say my life is crap? And who said my life is bad? I never did. I just said it is pointless. You make a lot of assumptions.

About the kill myself thing: My life is MINE. I reserve the right to live it or end it. Right now, living is pretty good to me. I think I will stick with it for a while.

St. Demetrios (patron saint of the weak and orpaned children and Great Martyr) 260AD-296AD, a former Roman Centurian and Senator who became Christian and worked in the Empire to bring comfort to the underprivilaged and take a stand against military tyranny.

This man is still known because he became Christian. Therefore his name was remembered and written down by those living in cloisters during the Middle-ages.

If those cloisters never existed and noone would have bothered to write down his name, he would be another nameless person, like so many others of which the names and deeds they've done are forever lost in history.

Giving food to homeless or starving people won't leave a very noticable mark in history.

Sure, if a person becomes Christian and strives for good and righteousness he/she can be cannonized and remembered throughout history as well. Over 50 million Orthodox Christians know who Demetrios is and seek to be like him. Dozens of churches have been named in his honor. Not a bad legacy for a guy that simply lived out his righteous convictions, eh? We collect and track the deeds of the people who make an impact on our faith, that way we can remember them and see their lives as an example to live by.

That's why those men were formed together, to write down the names of the Saints and their deeds. These roles continue to be added to (Mtr Teresa will be another example) and numbers of saints that are regularly remembered and revered number in the thousands, simply because they chose to follow their hearts and put their faith in God.

<< Giving food to homeless or starving people won't leave a very noticable mark in history. >>

You think Mtr. Teresa will be soon forgotten? No. And neither would you if you worked as hard to take care of the poor and needy as she did.

Noone will be remembered once hte human race is dead. It will happen eventually. Unless we evolve to some higher, currently incomprehensible, form of existence.

I don't find it incomprehensible, not in the least.

All matter in this universe will one day be pulled into black holes, so the Human species will become extinct.

Who said life should have a meaning?

There's no point in going all egotistic because of this, doing good to others might be doing good to yourself :) Humans are a social animals, so by helping your neighbour now you might help yourself in the future.

As I understand it, humans really don't need more facts to know what is right and wrong to do on this planet, the problem is raising above what's evolutionary best for you; to do high moral deeds for which you might not get anything back e.g. saving some species, which we do not have any use for now, from extinction, saving people from suffering who can't give anything back to you, just being unselfish....
