Murder rate in Iran is half that of the US. Murder in Japan is really low as well, but as discussed in the gun thread, this is because Japan basically has no rights; they are allowed to hold you until you confess.

I suspect that culture has more to do with it than anything else. Japan is a society where following the rules is a huge thing. People don't even jaywalk. They make the Germans and Swiss seems like a bunch of anarchists by comparison. There's also a massive stigma associated with criminality, getting convicted and locked up will get people disowned by their entire families. Never underestimate the power of shame.

Everyone who says they'd choose death over life w/o parole is full of it. Yeah some inmates volunteer for execution or kill themselves in prison, but the vast majority of them do not. If life in prison is so awful then why don't most inmates on death row voluntarily drop their appeals? Don't get me wrong, I have no doubt that being locked up for life sucks balls, but being alive is better than being dead.

I know guys who go in prison to get their teeth fixed and a break from hustlin/streets. It aint bad. One of my brothers likes it. He says he can't handle RL and he's right. Fucker should have been culled from heard 30 years ago before pooping 8 kids in this world with 3 different welfare queens.

We should do away with all prisons IMO. Make all punishment for crimes corporal or death....why victimize society twice? Once with the crime they did and second to support their stupid criminal ass.

Tagging - lose a finger
Stealing - you lose a hand
Rape & child molestation - lose nads
Kill someone any circumstance but accidental manslaughter - death... accidental manslaughter = lose all your money.
etc

Would clean up the streets real quick.

Hard to give someone back a hand after you realize you screwed up. Much easier to give them their freedom back. I have good news for you though. There's countries around the world you can move to if you want that kind of justice.

Also, people who commit crimes usually assume they're going to get away with it/don't think of the consequences. It doesn't matter how bad the punishment is.

There shouldn't even be an option for life in prison.

First you violate the rules of society in such a way that you can never be a part of it again and your punishment is to burden society for the rest of your life?

If it were up to me the longest possible prison sentence would be 25 years, anything longer than that would result in execution instead. Unfortunately our society is too pussified to ever do something like that.

Move to China, they're full of real men according to your definition..unlike just about every developed nation out there.

I prefer Singapore. That being said, China does know how to deal with criminals.

I've been to prison. To me it's an easy decision. Prison is the worst God forsaken place on the planet. I couldn't explain in words how awful that place is.

Well, I'd have time to work out, read, and write, which I don't have much time for now. I'd also get free cable TV, which I don't have now.

I guess it depends on what the prison life is like. I think I'd choose life in prison for the simple possibility of getting out on some technicality or something like that.

I'd choose prison.

If I'm still alive there is always still a chance, no matter how small, of achieving freedom, even if only temporary.

Yes, we should take tips from a country that stones adulterers. I think I'll stick with the "liberal" West, thanks. Though, it does appear to be full of people like you. Oh well, you take the good with the bad.

You talk of taking good with the bad but you don't have to. We can take their good points and leave the bad with them. All consensual crimes should not be crimes at all (drugs, sex, suicide) but those who violate others should be severally punished.

Oh and I find you culturally insensitive - everyone has something to offer even Saudi Arabia and China. What thinking people do is not tar whole country with one bad example but compare and contrast laws and punishment to see which works better.

you won't know how much you want to live until you are actually facing death

This.

I don't think any of us can imagine the horror of what it feels like knowing with absolute certainty that within a few minutes you will be strapped to a table, injected with poison and put down like a dog.

Even if you are in prison for life, you could hope for an apocalypse or world war that breaks you out.

Or, if you are going to die, you could at least try to escape.

No life is a wasted life.

Write a book or something.

It's probably a lot nicer than being gang raped
