Life as A Potterhead

Written by Miss Cordy
Published June 09, 2007

The fall of 1998 came and went for me like any other year. I was just starting middle school in a new town where I didn?t know anyone (with the exception of my sister, Samantha). I was enrolled in difficult honors classes. I was just starting to notice boys and actually caring about what I wore to school. And I was still new to the wonders of The WB and MTV. I had no idea that all across the country, something was happening.

At playgrounds, schools and grocery stores, people were spreading the word and talking about the same thing. They say that word-of-mouth spreads like wild fire, and so it was, that seemingly ordinary fall when the name Harry Potter was passed in excited whispers from one person to another. For on September 1, 1998, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer?s Stone was published in the United States. And the world of pop culture and literature has never been the same.

I love to read. I always have. But I?d never been in love with a book before. I?d never had genuine affection for a fictional character, or touched the worn out and torn cover of a book with such loving fondness. I?d never much cared about when a new book was to be released, let alone obsessively count down the days until it came out. However, that all changed when I first picked up that precious Harry Potter book, which had already been passed from my mother, to my sister, and now to me.

I had refused at first. Why did I want ...............

LOL i think it's a little hyperbole to say that 'the world of pop culture and literature has never been the same'.... heck, the Matrix had a bigger impact on culture than Harry Potter.

I've always found the series quite enjoyable. I can't wait for Deathly Hallows to come out.

I tried watching one of the movies, but I couldn't get into it. I'm not a fan of stuff like that. It's scary that this thing has such a cult-like following.

Yeah.... I'm not sure how they'll manage to fit all of Order of the Phoenix and The Half-Blood Prince all into a two and a half hour movie and do it well. The Goblet of Fire seemed so rushed and I fear the next few will follow the same fate.

Are you kidding? Even to this day, there are still people making references to Alice in Wonderland, taking the red or blue pill, 'how far does the rabbit hole goes', etc.

The Potter series has has a much bigger impact on pop culture than the Matrix.

I like the series. Rowling's writing sucks me in like few authors can.

I read the first book and saw the first movie, and i thought it was a very well adaptation. In fact, most of the dialogue was almost word for word iirc.

Especially since the Half blood prince was a bit rushed. There was a lot of info in it, but I think Rawlings wanted to put more in (great books btw, Not a fan of the movies though)

Perhaps I phrased it poorly. The Harry Potter series has had a much bigger impact on the partakers of pop culture than has the Matrix.

Blogs and forums, video games, release parties (for books AND movies), toys, apparel, etc. Much bigger impact from Harry Potter.

Hence Rowling is a multi-billionaire, and the Wachowski's... aren't. I almost called them brothers, but I guess they're not anymore.

Never got into the Harry Potter books. The only series of books that I remember anticipating the release was "The Green Mile" (originally released in 6 parts) by Stephen King. Yeah I read Stephen King books at the same age that people are now reading Harry Potter. The kids now are probably better off with a little wizard rather than some of the stuff I read (Insomnia, The Stand, The Green Mile, IT, Four Past Midnight, etc.).

I fail to see how the Matrix has so heavily influenced our culture. However, people of all ages and all backgrounds read and discuss the Potter series. The series is a real literary phenomenon, and I can't see how the Matrix' cultural footprint is anywhere near the size of the HP juggernaut.

I remember working in a bookstore when the Potter books first started coming out. In my opinion, the general level of activity preceding, and immediately following, this release was fairly comparable to that for the Matrix 1. The Potter phenomenon has lasted longer, though, simply because there have been more sequels.

However, to the average individual who is not terribly interested in either, they probably had about the same amount of impact on overall culture. Sure, there are tons of people who've read the Harry Potter series (possibly moreso--numers-wise, at least, if not proportionally--than any other series in literary history), but the number of people who read for pleasure in general is still going to likely be smaller than the number of people who opted to see a two-hour movie.

I will say, though, that the Potter series likely did more to introduce people both to its particular genre, and to pleasure reading as a whole, than did the Matrix trilogy to watching movies. So in that respect, it might've had a larger overall impact.

I sure have (not any conversations i've had, but i've certainly seen them). There's also a 'science' show called 'What the bleep? Down the Rabbit Hole'. And i don't know how many philosophical books and articles have been written about the Matrix. And don't forget all the movies and games that have used Bullet-time.
