You guys need to stop harping about the United Nations. The United Nations has condemned the violence in Libya. The Secretary General of the United Nations has spoken directly to Colonel Gaddafi to express his grave concern about what is going on in Libya. The deputy Libyan Ambassador has defected and asked for a Security Council meeting with respect to the atrocities going on in Libya. Apparently there will be a hearing.

Using fighter jets to bomb protestors is beyond hardcore, 2 pilots refused and fled the country in their fighters. Too bad they just didnt bomb the colonel.

Yeah. This guy is seriously fucked up in the head. He's even killed his own troops for refusing to fire on protestors.

And then there's this gem:
dibujo1e3-e1298215579335.jpg

A communiqué from Anonymous concerning events in Libya.
Anonymous | 19 February 2011:
Free Citizens of the World:
For a long time the people of Libya have suffered under the madness of their ruler, Muammar Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi, and his government. For too long, the people of Libya have suffered in silence. In the recent Tunisian and Egyptian uprisings, fear has vanished from Arabs all over the region. It is time to be silent no more.
Despite the efforts of the regime to send in mercenaries, cut off land communications, and ban their populations from getting the truth, the people of Libya have stood up to claim what is their human birthright: Freedom.
Anonymous is willing to bring its help to the brave people of Libya. Anonymous declares by this statement its engagement with them in the common goal. We, the people, will not remain silent while dictators fire upon their citizens. We, the people, will not remain inactive while the powerful crush peaceful claims with violence.
The time of dictatorship regimes is over. The time of oppression has come to an end. We, the people, will walk fearless towards the global goal. Anonymous sends this message to the Libyan people: You are not alone. The world is once again watching. Your brothers and sisters are watching. Anonymous extends its arms to you in solidarity at your time of struggle. Together, we will achieve what you are fighting for and Mankind will be free at last.
We are Anonymous.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
Expect us.

I heard on Radio this morning... Eastern part has been taken over by the rebels, its a minor part of the country. Gaddafi still controls the major part of the country. So basically Libya has been divided into Libya major and Libya minor

Butchering your own people to stay in power is pretty hard core, and my guess is that someone else in a position pf power may simply shoot Kaddifi instead. To simply stop the bloodshed.

Even if Kaddifi survives this revolt, the next on can't be far behind.

Since Gaddafi's mother was Jewish, he is, according to Israeli law, allowed to settle there to escape persecution. lol.

The Colonel has said he would die a martyr's death to defend his establishment. Looks like he would rather see the nation burn than relinquish power.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/02/23/us-libya-protests-idUSTRE71G0A620110223
A defiant Muammar Gaddafi said he was ready to die "a martyr" in Libya, vowing to crush a growing revolt which has seen eastern regions break free of his 41-year rule and brought deadly unrest to the capital.
...
But Gaddafi was unrepentant. Protesters were "rats and mercenaries" who deserved the death penalty, he said in the rambling, 75-minute speech. Gaddafi said he would call on people to "cleanse Libya house by house" unless protesters surrendered.

I think the patriots of Libya can oblige his proposal to be a martyr of authoritarians.

Funny The Colonel refers to the rebels as mercenaries. Reports say that he is brining in foreign mercenaries to expand his slaughter of innocents (since some domestic soldiers seem to be reluctant to fire upon civilians).

The UN is still virutally silent about this situation. iI bet if there were Jews running libya, they would meet almost immediately for a vote to condemn.

Don't worry... I'm sure that the UN council will vote to send Gaddafi a strongly worded letter condeming these attacks on protestors, which will be delivered a week or two after he's done butchering or imprisoning everyone who opposed him :|

Seriously, though... why is the UK become so useless?

It'll be interesting to see if he's able to apply enough force to put this thing down. I'm sure several other middle eastern states are watching intently. I don't really care if it goes one way or the other. I'm more interested in the process.

I predict kadgoffie is going down. If he is smart he will take his money and run, if not he will die a martyr in only his own mind. Do not pass go, do not collect 72 virgins, just die a well deserved death as a Libyan traitor and mass murderer.

evening news said that one of his commanders quit and said to support the revolt. Qaddafi is fucked. When is he going to unleash his personal guard? :awe:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muammar_al-Gaddafi
Bodyguards
Gaddafi's choice of bodyguards has been the subject of much media attention. His 40-member bodyguard contingent, known as the Amazonian Guard, is entirely female. All women who qualify for duty supposedly must be virgins, and are hand-picked by Gaddafi himself. They are trained in the use of firearms and martial arts at a special academy before entering service.[109]

he's got the rattiest lookin' beard i've ever seen.

He should move to Crawford to stay near his old buddy W - you know, the one who removed Libya from the "Sponsors of Terrorism" list...

or with any one of the democrats that didn't object and supported the decision.

Some people just don't know when they are not wanted anymore.

Time for him to do what other dictators should have done, cash out like Ferdinand Marcos.

Take the country's entire treasury, a hottie or 40 and then go buy news companies and use them to annoy your enemies till the end of your days.

Looks like Qaddafi loyalists are going house to house hacking people up with machetes. Pay back time.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/24/world/africa/24libya.html

Looks like a fail overall because he kept Army & opposition institutions weak while maintaining a cadre of powerful militia and loyalists who are very strong and well funded.

Just FYI non-violent protests depend on benevolence of regime in power. Always fail when regime decides to get extremely violent. Old lessons of war/insurgency/revolts, but some remember this universal truth, bring a bigger hammer. Not a good idea to stage protests against those who remember and have no conscience or qualms about using overwhelming force.

The King in Bahrain set the tone. I think this whole pan Arab revolution thing is petering out following this as a guide. Furthermore the other despots are prepared now by shoring up alliances and war gaming strategy and tactics.
