At first I thought it was going to be a commercial pushing the cap and trade bill, because almost everything they portrayed is in the bill, including the home inspections, business inspections, checkpoints, smartgrid, and a new line of government workers who will fine you for not adhering what they deem 'green enough' or 'carbon neutral enough'.

I knew it wasn't the cap and trade bill, but it pissed me off none the less. It reminded me too much of the book 1984 by George Orwell. All they left out were the thought police.

I would offer the theory that the average football fan is not into the "green" movement.

Discuss?

being a below average fan, i think i'm pretty green, but always get into an argument about having a pickup truck not being green... if you need space and capacity to carry things then you need a commensurate capacity vehicle... a prius can't carry the tuba section of the marching band like i do...

always seemed to me that being a 'conservative' kind of made you 'green' by your nature...

There is a lake in Guatemala that is being destroyed by folk washing their clothes on the river banks in detergent and bleach. They are killing the source of their lives. But people insist on their personal rights to destroy all the life around them. They see folk who would stop them as Nazis.

Awww, a little cute anecdote where a specific group does a specifically bad thing. Clearly we should throw out the Constitution and Bill of Rights for fear that we too might use 'detergent and bleach'.

It looked damned nice to me and would probably look even better in black with dark windows. But I like hatchbacks and wagons - especially Euros - so maybe it's just me.

Well, hopefully you don't live in Califormia where they want to outlaw black cars as well......

Best commercial of the night, IMO

(I've owned 2 Audis in the past 20 years...the only 2 cars I've ever owned as well)

Maybe it wasn't the best commerical, but I don't see how they shot themselves in the foot. They're targeting the hybrid crowd by showing them the green car of the year was a diesel.

Exactly. The advanced diesel engine in the BMW 335d and now Audi getting into the act is going to be a boon for auto enthusiasts and gearheads like me. I hope more diesel engines get certified here -- it is currently really expensive and end demand is still uncertain.

But perhaps many of you don't realize how much you can tune/remap the ECUs on modern turbo diesel engines. In the 335d for example, the stock engine is 275hp and 400 ft-lb torque while getting 27mpg city/36 hwy. Tuners are routinely remapping these to 350+hp and 500 ft-lb torque. That's some serious off the line acceleration. Try doing that and getting anywhere close to that mileage, even reduced after the tuning, on a conventional gas engine.

You can crank up the boost pressure like mad because diesel engines are made much stronger than gas engines due to them operating at much higher compression ratios needed to ignite the fuel. So I welcome more diesel engines here...especially the ones from Europe. Bring it on!

Not at all. It's just a story to show you that, sure enough, just like them, you see anybody who threatens to take away your right to destroy the world only as a Nazi.

Nazi? No Moonbeam I appreciate the difference between genocide and simply wanting to dictate people's lives to them.

LEDs don't become practical until we get off the AC kick. Anyone know how many things in their home are truly 120V? IMO going to a 24V or 12V system would be much better. Hell, I'd even go for a 48V system if it'll get us off the AC BS.

But, those lights are pretty cool. I'd buy them if they came down to the 30-40 range.

lmao! okay Edison.

I thought the commercial was pretty hilarious, mostly because I was watching the Superbowl in mixed political company. My dad said he felt sick, and my aunt said it was the best commercial she had seen in a long time.

I think the commerical was a great move by Audi with all upside and no downside. If you liked the ad then you might associate Audi with eco-friendly vehicles. If you didn't like the ad, then most of your ire was probably directed at the actors in the ad and you still might still associate Audi with good gas mileage and low emissions. Audi is hoping that a few months from now you will have forgotten the ad entirely but associate the Audi brand with responsible and smart engineering.

I wouldn't be surprised if eco-groups were less than thrilled about this ad since Audi sets them up to take the negative backlash. If anybody remembers this ad negatively a few weeks from now they'll probably even forget that it was an Audi commercial.

As an owner, please take my advice-the only green thing about VW/Audi is the long green you dole out for frequent repairs, especially to track down electronic gremlins.

No kidding. I just recently changed my sig after about a year of it reading 'Don't EVER buy a Volkswagen'. I loved how my GTI VR6 drove but it broke down often and it was expensive EVERY time. Never again, VW. Never again.

While alienating me, a potential future Audi buyer, by pissing me off and boycotting them. Extrapolate how I feel by the enter population.

Yeah.. after I bought a new GTI, I sold it less than a year later. All the repairs were obviously covered under warranty, but it was in the shop more than I drove it. Blown turbo oil seals filling the intercooler with oil, whining transmission that had to be replaced twice, HID headlight leveling broke twice, more warning lights on my dash than a F-18 about to crash, more burnt out bulbs than I could keep up with replacing, etc.

You got lucky... Mine didn't start until about year 4 when it was out of warranty. I seriously don't know how they can still sell cars when there are so many better options out there.

You would let one stupid commercial influence your car buying decision? Um, ok... o_O

Your reaction is not rational.

You would make a decision that is WORSE for you in the short and long term, just to increase the pollution on the planet, making it WORSE for all of us, just to piss off a group of people that you don't like. That's acting a bit juvenile, if you ask me.

My reaction is completely rational. I'll be shopping around for a certain class of car. There will probably be 3 or 4 in that class that are very similar in terms of cost/performance/quality/comfort etc, and Audi just fell out of the running. It's not going to hurt me one bit, short or long term.

Talked to a few of the folks at work today as well, those who are in the taret market for Audi's, Bimmers, Acura's etc, and they all had pretty much the same disgusted reaction. I'm sure most people are not going to boycott Audi over some stupid commercial, but they certainly did not do themselves any favors in terms of their image among the target market.

The ad did do pretty well with the overall population (at least according to usa today).

this all seems so odd... i never saw this as anything more than a commercial... it was someone's concept of how to catch my attention to make me think about their product...

i'm checking the batteries in my sarcasm meter, but did anyone really take the goofy caricatures in this commercial as anything but that? come on guys - they'll ban all personal transport before any of the rest of those things happen...

It seems a little ridiculous to discuss boycotting Audi over the ad. Their green police were clearly over the top caricatures and the Audi driver had a huge smile on his face as he accelerated away from them. If the green police upset you then you were supposed to feel that buying a 42mpg Audi diesel would get them off your back.
