At first I thought it was going to be a commercial pushing the cap and trade bill, because almost everything they portrayed is in the bill, including the home inspections, business inspections, checkpoints, smartgrid, and a new line of government workers who will fine you for not adhering what they deem 'green enough' or 'carbon neutral enough'.

That was a terrible ad. I'm one of the folks who might be in the market for an Audi soon... and they certainly alienated me with the ad. Instead of making me want to go out and buy that eco-friendly Audi, it made me want to go out and buy a giant Hummer just to give the eco-nuts the finger.

Using some of the newer LEDs instead of CFLs for energy savings, better lighting and fewer dangerous byproducts.

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/02/07/swapping-my-lights-fantastic/

LEDs don't become practical until we get off the AC kick. Anyone know how many things in their home are truly 120V? IMO going to a 24V or 12V system would be much better. Hell, I'd even go for a 48V system if it'll get us off the AC BS.

But, those lights are pretty cool. I'd buy them if they came down to the 30-40 range.

I thought Audi shot itself in the foot with that ad. Very stupid of them. I thought it was a satire making fun of the green shit until I realized at the end they were being serious. I will now never buy an Audi.

Why would you be against a diesel car that simply uses it's fuel efficiently?

Maybe it wasn't the best commerical, but I don't see how they shot themselves in the foot. They're targeting the hybrid crowd by showing them the green car of the year was a diesel.

I don't know, but it was such a weird commercial, at first portraying the green movement as very intrusive, fascist, and basically plain evil. Then after basically setting up the green movement as being so bad, it says, you can be part of the green movement by buying this car.

You have absolutely no idea how much electricity you would waste with a DC system. The difference would be significant.

Even with 48v your wires would have to be HUGE to support anything that needed any kind of real power. Good luck running a hair dryer on 48v (let alone, 24 or 12v).

Not to mention at 48v DC begins to get seriously dangerous, moreso than AC.

Now, a parallel system, where you had a big, efficient 48v transformer in your basement, and where you normally have 2 wall sockets, you would now have 2 AC 120v and 2 DC 48v sockets, that might make sense. But, unfortunately that's not the way it is, and it's not gonna change for the forseeable future.

This. I was watching this commercial thinking, "Wow...this is exactly what many in the AGW Cult want to happen! What is this commercial for?" Then, it ended up being for Audi, and I was like meh. Still though, eerie stuff...ALL of what was portrayed in the commercial is what many on the left want.

I did like the satirical cover of Dream Police though. :p

I think I saw all those "green jobs" I keep reading about in that commercial.

Ha! :D

Your reaction is not rational.

You would make a decision that is WORSE for you in the short and long term, just to increase the pollution on the planet, making it WORSE for all of us, just to piss off a group of people that you don't like. That's acting a bit juvenile, if you ask me.

I wonder if this commercial was supported by any sort of 'stimulus' funds? Obviously the company is German but there is probably a U.S. component.. someone check into that.. :)

what an ugly car...so many Audis are better looking that that crap.

It looked damned nice to me and would probably look even better in black with dark windows. But I like hatchbacks and wagons - especially Euros - so maybe it's just me.

As an owner, please take my advice-the only green thing about VW/Audi is the long green you dole out for frequent repairs, especially to track down electronic gremlins.

Yeah.. after I bought a new GTI, I sold it less than a year later. All the repairs were obviously covered under warranty, but it was in the shop more than I drove it. Blown turbo oil seals filling the intercooler with oil, whining transmission that had to be replaced twice, HID headlight leveling broke twice, more warning lights on my dash than a F-18 about to crash, more burnt out bulbs than I could keep up with replacing, etc.

Hey look, someone stuck in the AC thinking world.

48V more dangerous than AC? smoke much? Low voltage (<50V DC) is much safer that 120VAC.

Sure, I imagine we'll have to go through a transitional period where both will be needed until manufacturers can make the appropriate changes. Lighting would be the best place to start as the power consumption is low enough that wiring issues would be minimal.

Pretty easy to do... set up your own solar panels and a few deep cycle lead acid batteries should do the trick. You won't need an inverter if you just want pure 12 volt system, and a lot of things like mp3 players, cellphones, etc...etc... can run straight on the same line. So... What are you waiting for? Get with it...

Screw the grid!

I would offer the theory that the average football fan is not into the "green" movement.

Discuss?

I didn't say it was hard to do. I said it wasn't practical yet. There are few DC lighting options but yes, if one had solar panels they could run household lighting with it if they wished.
