I've always looked at Gun culture as regional. Not political.
Good points, I'll stress the motives for gun ownership is not where the potential to unify this nation can be found, but rather the end results of gun ownership could provide some sort of unity.
edit: as to the regional not political, look at the electoral district map. Politics correlates pretty highly with region! So my argument is basically that we can kind of come together as gun owners and be friendly, and not really view eachother as "other" people but the same people.
