Beneath these averages are some demographic differences. For many years, researchers found that women were happier than men, although recent studies contend that the gap has narrowed or may even have been reversed. Political junkies might be interested to learn that conservative women are particularly blissful: about 40 percent say they are very happy. That makes them slightly happier than conservative men and significantly happier than liberal women. The unhappiest of all are liberal men; only about a fifth consider themselves very happy.

Only a conservative could be happy with America in it's current state. In other news, Jews during the 1940's less happy than Lutherans.

How do you turn a man from a liberal to a conservative? You pay him 100 grand a year. Liberal men tend to be poorer and want more wealth equality/sharing. Since they aren't getting it they are unhappy.

The rise of independents have muddied the waters, but it's interesting that the Democratic and Republican split of high income earners have closed and is basically equal at this point.

It did get me to thinking why nearly all the engineers/product folks in Silicon Valley I know are incredibly liberal, though they are definitely at the top end of incomes and a good number are easily in the 1%. This compared to say more traditional fields like banking, medicine or law where I'd assume there is skewing toward Republicans, along with most small business owners I know.

My off the cuff conclusion? This is obviously generalizing, but if you get into a career for the express purpose of making money, you'll skew conservative. If you get into a career with the primary goal of being challenged/fulfilled, you'll skew liberal.

Are you sure he was referring to what is considered liberal in american politics? Liberal in the past and presently in the rest of the world means something quite different. The modern american liberal would probably be more accurately described as a socialist (Marxist) by Churchill...

It is very unsurprising to me that liberals are less happy. Both genders of liberals are attempting to swim up stream and live lives which are at odds with their own gender's natural tendencies, as a way of proving a point and trying to re-engineer society. Conservative men and women embrace their natural gender roles, and are consequently more at peace and happier.

Though I personally was happier as a liberal than I am now as a "conservative" if that is what I've become. This I attribute to my new found awareness of the mortal wounds liberalism has inflicted on civilization, and my understanding of the grim fate which awaits it within my lifetime.

I don't really understand what you mean by this. Liberals have pretty decisively won the political battle in America since the 1960's. They have this country by the balls. Do they have it as tightly by the balls as they do in Sweden or Britain or France? Perhaps not, but conservatives certainly don't hold sway.

I'm sure conservatives said the same thing in the 1960s when civil rights laws were passed. And in the early 1900s when women's suffrage rights were passed. And in the late 1800s when the slaves were about to be freed. And in the 1700s, when there were rumblings of revolution against the british.

Honestly this probably just parallels prior studies that show religious men tend to be happier than non religious. Its already been established that conservatives tend to be religious. As to why religion tends to make people happy, I won't even stir that pot.
