I have been noticing that a common way of responding to posts is to quote them and change the contents of the quote. I have yet to be libeled that way, but in the case that I am, I dunno what response I am allowed. Is it truly an accepted form of response on this forum, or what?

Well, actually they are my sisters panties but you get my drift. Is it truly an accepted form of response on this forum, or what?
The proper response is to assume a stance of dominance and then nuke them from orbit.

Fixed that for you.

If there is an indication that a modification was made to the quote, then it usually slides unless the content is a serious issue.

Ah, and as I see in this thread, there are already cases where the indication of change is made is made (allisolm's for example) and where there isn't (oldmoboat's).

Allisolm's change != "serious issue".

I am aware of that. Allisolm's change has an indication, it is not a serious issue, and would slide. Oldmoboat's does not have an indication.

I'd tell you how to handle it, but my lawyer advises me against it.

Generally people who alter your quotes think they're being clever or funny and aren't being particularly malicious or intending to mislead. For that reason it usually slides.
