Well, I made the switch last night from my Antec SX1040BII to the Lian-Li V1100B. Since I did it right, it wasn't a fast move. I've routed the wires better than I could have in the old Antec, although I might be able to do better still inside the Lian-Li. As it stands, the case/system is about 3x quieter than it was inside the Antec case. It's probably due to the sound dampening material, tight fitting panels, and thick aluminum as well as the two 120mm fans. The only thing I see is my processor temps are a bit higher than they were inside the Antec case. About 5c higher, on average. I've also installed the Arctic Cooling 5 (for my 6800GT) so that my video card is not adding to the case temp (it's temps dropped about 20C).

I ran the system all night and have it running now and the temps are staying about the same. I'm wondering, now, if I install the Thermalright SLK-948U heatsink along with either of three fans I have, if that will do a lot. The fan options are 92mm Vantec Stealth, Tornado and a 90mm Thermaltake fan shown here. I was going to use the thermaltake fan, except it won't clip properly to the heatsink. I'd need to rip up some hole extensions onto the fan (looking into that) so that the clips will grab. Otherwise the options are the two Vantec fans. Will the Stealth move enough air to do a better job. Or do I really NEED to use the hair dryer volume Tornado fan? I suppose I could try both fans and see which does the job without getting too loud. I do have a fan speed adjuster (whatever you call the thing, been fighting a migraine today so cut me some slack) that I could use on the tornado if it gets too loud. That is, unless the Tornado itself is variable speed. If that's the case, then I might just go for that and see what happens.

Either way, before the weekend is out I want to have the 948U on my processor to see what that does for the temps.

Any experience comments/advise with the 948U on an Athlon64 3400+ (754 pin) would be appreciated.

if you dont go xp 120 use an ac freezer. cheaper silent and cools better than my xp 90 if just a lil. i dont own a xp 120 so that one being better is only speculation based on how ppl talk about it , some reviews and the fact that the freezer cools really just a tiny bit better than the my 90, less than the xp 120 would cool better most likely. its still more quiet and less cash. then again if you dont mind buying that case you wont care about additional 30 bucks for the hsf i guess.

If it wasn't clear, I already HAVE the 948U heatsink here. I have the three different fans to chose from as well... I just can't decide if I should use one of the Vantec or modify/adapt the Tt to work... It does have a CFM rating between the two Vantec's and a db rating close to the Stealth...

If the stealth moves enough air it's the only one I'd use out of those that you have. TT is garbage and the tornado is far too loud.

If that was my system I wouldn?t skimp on anything; besides you just spent $200+ on a case.

I'd get this Panaflow.

Obviously, the more air you move over the heatsink, the better it will cool... That's why I picked up the Tt fan (unless you've used something, don't say it's garbage). Is that the H1 fan (didn't see any model designation on that site)? The Stealth fan doesn't move that much air, compared to the others. Between 20 and 30 CFM if I recall correctly. The Tornado could be loud, but I'm wondering how loud it will be inside the new case. As I mentioned, this new case makes my system a LOT quieter. I would like to get the processor temps lower, which is why I picked up the 948U a couple of months back. I'm also getting the feeling that the fan on the processor is starting to get tired. I'll need to do something this week to improve the cooling...

So your using the stock HS/F right now? Sorry if I missed it.

I think that?s the "L" series Panaflow, I doubt you'll hear it even @ 12v over your 120mm case fans. As for the Tornado, it will be fairly loud. The Tornado is built by Sunon which are not very quiet fans at any voltage, your case will help a lot but won't completely mask the sound. I've had experience with TT in the past, either way there is much better stuff out there.

Side note: Do you know the specs of the fans that came with your case their Adda's right?

No idea about the fan spec's that came in the new case... Didn't look at them, just left them installed as they were. The front fan is being fed off of a regular molex feed, not a dedicated fan feed, so it's probably spinning at 100%. The rear fan is connected to the mobo, so it's spinning as it needs to.

Yeah, I have the stock retail processor HSF right now. I was going to use the Tt fan that I got (they weren't that expensive and have good spec's) until I saw that they wouldn't connect to the 948U. I've ordered one of the H1 fans, which will be here in a few days. I'll install that fan onto the heatsink and replace the retail one that I'm currently using. Hopefully the 27db rating that fan has will be at, or below, the stock fan for noise. Just one step/inch closer to a even more silent system.

As it stands now, I'll probably connect it to my tv and sound system for playing back recorded tv. So far, I've been burning dvd's and playing those. With the new case and such, the system is more than quiet enough to run while I'm watching tv and not make me turn up the tv to compensate.

I'm thoroughly impressed by the Lian-Li case, where I never was before (never saw one of this line before, just the cheesy ones that look like 100 other cases). I wonder if they make a desktop type with the same noise dampening materials inside too... That would be a great settop box.
