THAT would be awesome. Make the entire ring a FPS level. Maybe some halo map or something.

Now I know where I saw that before.
It is a giant version of the power connector that cyborgs have on their arms ,used to connect to the system.
 
I got to see the the D-zero detector and I think the CDF detector as well when they were opened up like that at Fermi Lab. This was back when they were doing the upgrades and adding the booster ring. It looked pretty much just like the one in the OP although it may have been a bit smaller, the detector looked like it was about 2.5 stories, not 3 but what the hell, the damn thing is so friggin enormous it's hard to grasp the scale of it.
