Looking for an entry-level LGA775 mb, must not be picky on ram & be able to run 2x2Gb DDR2-800. Some overclocking ability is desired but cost is the main consideration. Any suggestions?

Look for an ABIT IP35-E in the for sale forum. You can probably find one for $50 now. I have my e6750 running at 3.4 on air with simple tweaks. Stable.

If I only run 1 sata HDD, does it matter if it has ICH7 or ICH9? Is the G31 more picky on ram than other Intel chipsets?

Kinda hard to make a rec without knowing what kinda chip you are interested in as it will make a diff on the MB you would need when it comes to overclocking. And I'd guess you would need to state if your looking for a matx or atx form factor.

For example the GIGABYTE GA-G41M-ES2H is a great board for overclocking dual core chips. Will push my e5200 to 4.16ghz 100% stable. With this board a chip that runs native on the fsb of 800 or 1066 you have overclocking headroom. The board will work with a chip with a native fsb of 1333 but does not have any overclocking headroom left.

If you plan on running a quad core chip and overclocking you need to pony up for a higher quality board such as the Gigabyte UD3R or P P45 or something similar

If your looking for a combo check my forsale thread in sig. Combo #2 could put alot of power in a small place with good cooling of course. Has been thoroughly tested @4.16ghz :)

Get whatever Gigabyte board meets your price point.

I'm running the EP45-UD3P currently on one rig and an older S-series board in another (Both S775).

Not a single problem with either one.

I just intend to use it with either a Celeron E3300 or Pentium E6500/7500, nth fancy.

Then you should be OK down in the budget board category. I never played around much with one of the Gigabyte G31 boards but have read and been told that the G41's are better for overclocking as they can push the fsb higher most of the time. And have tested mine pretty damn good so I can also vouch for them.

Do G41 mbs offer better ram compatibility than G31? How abt Asus?

Not sure if it offers better ram compatability or not but is a better chipset.

I'm kinda partial to Gigabytes bang for buck boards as they are the only ones I've tried lately.

Asus also makes some good motherboards. I'm sure others could chime in with some rec's

If you go with a quad-core down the road, the Gigabyte UD3R or P boards will overclock them into the 500fsb range with ease. My old Maximus II Formula board screamed like a little girl in pain at 479fsb I think I heard it say "please! Stop! NO More!" lol -

Imagine what it could do with a wolfdale :hmm:
