Well, the only Sandy i7 CPUs that I know of, are the 2600K and the 2700K. Maybe they came in non-K variants as well. Those might be cheaper used. Don't think that you'll find any new.

Why do you want / need an i7? Just to "max out" the socket on your existing motherboard?

What about junking the whole thing, and going for a Skylake i5-6500 and H170 board?

Such a lovely "problem" you have. You have a motherboard, and want a better CPU. Why not?

I killed my old p55A motherboard, but the i7 860 in it still works. Trouble is, I can't find an inexpensive motherboard that still works. Ah, well.

You have the opposite problem, and it's a good one. The Sandy Bridge CPU's were the last to have a soldered IHS. They can be OC'd very high. And CPU's last forever. You ought to be able to find one.

How do you kill a motherboard?

I guess I'm not sure why you would want to cripple an i7 in a lowly H61 board.

I fail to see how a non-K i7 would be crippled.

OP, your choices are i7 2600, 2600K, and 2700k. There are also some Xeon CPUs that would likely work.

By accidentally touching a 5v line with a 12v wire. Kaput. End of a long friendship. It was my play-with motherboard. It had many a device on it. And to tell you how long it lasted: it was replaced with a Devil's Canyon mb.

By tying that superior processing power to inferior I/O buses, like SATAII and only USB2.0.

Nothing a pair of pci cards couldn't fix.I have a H61 with just usb 2.0 and Sata 3 and i don't feel to bad with my i5 2500 in there.Started off with a i3 2100 and this was the cheapest board around at the time.Gigabyte H61M-HD2.

USB 2.0 works just fine for my keyboard and mouse and gaming headset.Sata 6 would be nice but those write speeds come in handy maybe once in a full moon if your installing a game?Could a game installer even push 300+mbps on writes?

I like to think my set up is humble,i don't worry much about bottlenecks either considering i just went 1440p. I would need a pair of 980 ti and a sli compatible 1155 motherboard before my cpu even ended being a bottleneck for 1440p if even then lol.

Thinking on getting a i5 3550 for it

Perhaps a 6gbps sata pcie card

USB 3 is overrated, as long as you don't use external drives every single day, you don't need to worry. No to mention nehalem and sandy bridge chipsets used external controller which wasn't very reliable.
