LG Optimus 2x vs. Samsung Galaxy S 4G - does anyone have any experience with these?

Hi folks,

My SO is changing mobile phone providers, and is now looking at getting one of these two phones. Assuming that the price is the same, which one would you say is better?

My personal preference (based on specs) would be the LG. It has a dual-core processor, IPS + Gorilla glass, as well as a better camera. On the other hand, there are quite a few people who complain that the device reboots or crashes all by itself.

The Samsung seems to be slower, and has an AMOLED screen. Haven't seen much about it, and it looks like it's been superseded by a newer model.

*edit* In case this makes a difference, the new phone will be used on the Wind network (Canada)...

Thoughts?

The Galaxy S 4G is basically the same as the old one but they added HSPA+.
I've had both the G2x and the S extensively and the G2x is the better phone by far.
I think its the best bargain phone for Tmobile right now.
My wife took my Galaxy II so I had to go back to the IP4 and stuck with edge.
Been looking for a used G2x to tie me over until Tmobile next big phone.

LG Optimus 2X... mainly because it will get a ICS update and the SGS will not. Not to mention the 2X has faster hardware. As for a rebooting issue..hadn't heard about it but it might have been some defective units?

the galaxy s 4g is slow by today's standards. and it will be pretty laggy if you dont install custom roms, due to Samsung's proprietary file system which seriously hinders performance.

get the g2x if Wind does not support hsdpa+ (1700/2100 mhz) because the galaxy s 4g is the same as the galaxy s vibrant, sans the "4g"

Have you had both phones to say neither ??

One is an phone with a well known flawed design.

Another is basically a two year old phone.

If I have to chose the Samsung seems better just based on the fact it is not flawed by design, but paying a little bit to get any other dual core seems worth it.

Heh, I'm thinking about the LG Optimus 2X for straight talk. It's $349 on amazon, right now. OTOH, I'm thinking about downgrading to a samsung exhibit 2 on the $30 t-mo plan, and getting a droid 1 for the $80/2000 minute page plus plan. Both phones would be cheaper, heh.

lol. Because you have to have a device to know anything about it...

Allow me to introduce you to the Internet. You can learn things on it. They have these things called benchmarks that tell you what kind of performance something has. There's also this novel thing called a video where you can actually observe how something behaves with your own eyes. It's a pretty neat thing. You should try it sometime. It will change your life.

From what I've read, the UI skin was flawed on release. Are you talking about anything else?

Actually I have had some hand's on time with versions of both.

My friend got a TMobile 2x soon after it was released. I liked the feel in my hand and the screen, but didn't like the overall design. He HATED the phone- it crashed on him a lot. He replaced it with a Sensation a few months later.

Also I have seen two versions of the SGS1- one stock AT&T and a ROMed Int version. The stock AT&T one was sluggish compared to my SGS2, but the ROMed one almost felt as fast. I couldn't handle that phone because of how much I hate pentile, but for honestly it is a decent phone overall (if you don't need a GPS).

If I have to chose, I chose the Samsung. If you are willing to hack it a little it has two years left in it before its obsolete.

Its design is such that it overheats. Just like my Prime's metal back kills the GPS, it is a design flaw that every version has and you can't avoid (unless you underclock or something I guess). LG's refusal to admit the design flaw lead to a HUGE uproar online:

In retrospect it is obvious they rushed it to lay claim to having the first dual-core phone.

Give it a break. You 2 have nothing constructive to help what the OP is asking.
I've gone from using a galaxy s to G2x to galaxy 2.
I liked the form factor I'd the G1 but it's too slow for android.
The g2x was the first android phone that was usuable. Its dual core so the laginess of android went away. Nice form factor and a beautiful IPS display.
I got my hand on a cheap g2 so I bought one.
Look at the used market. G2x can be had for $150 while g2 are still selling for $400.
While it's better than the G2x it didnt warrant the $250 difference.
The only thing I didn't like about the g2x was the battery life.
For the 7 months that I was using it, I didn't even root it.
Just had a different launcher and it worked great.
For what you can get the g2x right now, it's highly recommend.

Let me introduce you on how to read.
He asked if anyone had experience with these 2 particular phone.
If he wanted reviews on these I'm pretty sure he can just do a search for them.
If you learn how to read correctly it's pretty neat. It will change your life.

I have the G2x. Flash one of the ROMs on XDA and whatever issues you have with it will go away. When I bought it at first it had froyo and it used to reboot. However after the official GB update I have not had those and after flashing CM7 I have not had any reboots either and with CM7 its really speedy.

I have the T-Mobile Vibrant, which is the Galaxy S 4G without HSPA+ and it's only got Android 2.2 and a ton of bugs.

It gets slower over time to the point it's unusable because it doesn't have enough RAM and still has buggy software. Plusses for the S4G would be Amoled screen and more storage.

I would personally go with the G2x, you have 14 days to try it out and exchange it - 30 if you go trough BestBuy.

 where are you finding that price? I can't find anything under $300...

I live in Orlando.
Do a search for G2x under cellphones-owner and find plenty for $200.
I've seen them go for $150 before but they are gone before I get to it.
Also under Ebay, under completed listing, plenty of them go for under $200.

I have the G2X, as does a friend, both crash fairly frequently. And the phone does have overheating problems, although installing Cyanogenmod seems to have helped with stability. I've heard the Optimus 2X is even worse since it has LG's crapware user interface installed.

I would go with the Galaxy Nexus GSM version at this point, it's ~$440 new right now, but worth it.
