Hi everyone,

I'm really torn. I'd really like a DVD burner, if not for DVDs themselves, but for the huge amount of storage/backup it gives us.

Which one of these should I get? I'm pretty much set on one of these.

Can anyone w/ these drives give their pros and cons w/ their drive and why?

And would they buy it again?

Thank you :)

Tom's Hardware likes the 4040B.

Incidently, I bought the 4040B mainly because of the price but I was very surprised with its performance; with the right media it is very fast...quiet too. I have never burned a coaster with it, unless there was some sort of user input error (I clicked the wrong button on the burning program).

Thanks for your reply bluntman :)

CDFREAKS.COM has a kinda negative review of this drive, especially mentioning its poor quality of its +R burns...

It also comments on Tom's Review (not very positively)

On its own:

On some discs there is great difference in quality......and as said in the review I'm most disappointed by the DVD+R write quality...

another commentor:

This really makes the LG look very bad in comparison to the Pioneer (Memorex). Especially in the +R category. It doesn't even seem able to burn well on a TY disk. That's a first...

I'd prefer three independent reviews unless there are a bunch of forum probs or praises. Those are important, but it takes a long time to get the accuracy and by then "manufacturer A" has fixed the problem and you have the lag time again.

Do a search or check the review sites, get enough independent reviews and make your deceision. I still make a mistake (the way or particular software combo used) that can be an expensive learning experience, but it still costs me less in the long run.

I have the 4040B

it's picky with media... and for some reason, I can only burn at 2x, flashed the firmware, tried many different software, many different media... only burns at 2x (and it even says 2x if you try to query the drive properties) so i am going to bring it back where i got it and see what they think.

but the drive writes nicely, and it's REALLY quiet. i mean, QUIET!
