I noticed alot of people purchasing monitors lately...and was wondering why no one has posted anything on the LG 995E monitor...At staples you can get it for 307.99 and use the 40 off coupon for a total of 267.99. It was rated better than the Viewsonic PF790...the Sony GD400 ( which is hard to believe, but nonetheless..it was) And I checked Sharky's review, PCWorld, PC Mag..and this one is consistently in the top 5. Is there a reason why this isn't a hot deal? I mean Ive never bought any LG/Goldstar products...they any good...or is there some forum info somewhere on this model that has negatives on it.

If not, I am going to try and get this monitor.

I have bought about 6 of these monitors (5 for clients and one for my self) and they are great. I have had one minor problem with one of them but at $270 (I have been paying $340) you can't go wrong. I use mine at home for image editing and love it.

Yeah, if it's not a flat display, it's not in 'vogue'. For instance, Amazon has a Samsung 19" flatscreen (955df) for 258.94 shipped after mir. It's cheaper, and it's flat; to wit: people get their panties in bunch over it.

The one I had problems with was being used by a CAD user at 1600 X 1200. At this resolution there was a 2" by 2" area that was a little fuzzy. At other resolutions it worked fine. I called tech support and they were willing to replace it. However, I my client did not send it in so I don't know how it would have turned out.

Personally, I think that flat screens are overrated. The last review I read on 19" monitors did not have one flat screen in the top 10.

yah i agree...flatscreen is overrated...which is why i wonder why ppl will pay for a lower rated flat then a higher rated tube...

I mean according to the reviews..the flatscreens don't ever do to well..at least not the ones in the price range we all are wanting to pay.
anyhow, if there are any negatives...that you guys have had please post em...i really need to hear any dirt.

thanks

how does this monitor compare with the Viewsonic PF790...for people who have seen both or have had experiences with either one...

Well, my wife bought one on my recommendation and the one we recieved has a more pronounced contrast problem with icons on a black screen background than most monitors I've seen. Lots of white bleed (about an inch and a half to the left or right from the edges, with less of a problem in the center). I found this to be strange, but other than that, this monitor is a great deal. Besides the colors being nowhere near as bright as my friend's Sony Trinitron, the geometry is better and watching Toy Story 2 DVD on this monitor (995e) was a *religious* experience. The clarity is awesome, but if you like rich colors, you might want to go with an Aperture Grille tube, like the Samsung 700nf (17" monitor around the same price), which is what I'll probably be getting soon.

I bought one of these 995Es last summer. It is a great monitor. It is razor sharp, edge to edge, at all resolutions, including 1600. As comparison I just bought one of the Mercata Compaq 19" MV920 monitors for $175 after rebate. This monitor is fuzzy, especially at high resolution. Even at this rock-bottom price, I am sending it back. Luckily Mercata is paying for return shipping.

Stay away from the 995E if you have a GeForce and/or hate bleeding edges! I had two 995Es(after I RMA'd the first one) and both exhibited the white bleed discombob talks about. They also had serious problems with GeForce ghosting. I used both a Visiontek GF256 and a Creative GF2 GTS with the 995E and both had severe ghosting at all resolutions and refresh rates! I have confirmed (by talking to someone who bought the 995E in the Fall of '99 and has no problems with his GeForce) that the cause of the ghosting is the low-quality attached VGA cable on the newest revision of the 995E introduced in 2000. When the 995E first came out, it had a high-quality, detachable VGA cable AND good ratings (look at the review dates)...then price dropped this year and so did the quality.

But if you don't mind the bleeding, and if you don't have a GeForce, then by all means get this highly acclaimed monitor...I'm just happier with my $300 Samsung 950P using a GeForce.

I will say though, LS's customer support was AWESOME...they sent me FedEx 2-day Air shipping labels for both RMAs and refunded ALL of my money when I wasn't satisfied with the second monitor.

No deals on the 950P you say? What about:

Here

Using a certain $50 off $200 coupon, and with Amazon's free shipping for two more days, you could get the Samsung Syncmaster 950P for $237.94! Comes with a detachable VGA cable and BNC connectors! Geometry is a little hard to optimize, but after the 995E hell, it's like heaven....heaven enough to be PC World's #1 monitor, whatever that means ;)

Oh, and I haven't heard about any GeForce horror stories with the Viewsonic PF790...though, isn't it a LOT more expensive?

:| Addamon -> You said service was great? Well, I had the 995e for a very short while as they changed the spscs on them monitor but not on the website.... LG would not do anything about it...
So I got a 912U instead (wich is basically the same thing but with a usb hub and short-neck) After repairing it 2 times I said enough. I waited 5 weeks to finnaly get another one sent. No one returns any calls there, and because I live in Canada and Customer service is in Alabama, they put the blame on each other, Alabama said LG Canada should take care of this and vice versa.
But reaaly most frustrating is that noe one returned any calls. SO finally I got them to send a refurbished one... wich of course was defective... and so one, now it's been 8 weeks, I now know all the people in thoses departments, because they keep tranfering my problem to each other...

Some of actually got money back from LG? Well, they say that they never do that... Oh well, you can sure bet I'm not getting an LG product ever. BTW LG mean Lucky Goldstar, because Goldstar was in such financial troubles and still managed to rebound, that they called this "new" compagny LUCKY Goldstar... wich of course does not apply for it's customers...

Ciao !

Sorry to hear about your troubles man! I was very professional and patient with LG at every step and I was never denied anything I asked for....two FedEx 2-day air RMA labels and a full refund later, I'd definitely say that we had different experiences with LG...regardless of service though, the fact that they upped the revision on the 995E (dropping the detachable VGA cable and who knows what else inside!) without changing the Web site specs was disgusting...In fact, I brought that up in one of my final emails which resulted in the refund!

What is better the Samsung 955P or Samsung 955DF? You say you can get hte 955P for $290 but you can also get the 955DF for $258. Which would you do?

Look at my post, you can get the 950P for $237.94 at Amazon!!! The DF is a mediocre flatscreen monitor at best....

WOW!! good find on the 950P!
This monitor is really good..I've seen it with my own eyes and really liked it!

I guess this should be the choice then..thanks again :)

oh and there is a certain Staples "stacking" thing going on...which brings the PF790 to around $307.99 then minus $50 viewsonic rebate...comes out to 257.99

which is also damn good for a PC world top 10 (8th place) flat screen mon.
tho I was wondering if anyone out there had it and had good or bad experiences with it.

LG is the new name for Goldstar. I have had a GoldStar vcr, TV as well as memory sticks. Many of my friends back in Europe have had Goldstar monitors for years. Never had any problems with them. They are a huge Korean manufacturer, I personally compare them to Samsung. In Europe this brand is pretty big, they have been around for decades.--esprit

Can someone explain to me what Staples coupons to use.

Thanks.

Oooooooh yeah I forgot...well then you might be able to "Staples-stack" with the 950P as well:

Staples 950P

I'm not sure what the total would be, but it looks like it could be cheaper than even Amazon...but that PF790 sounds like a smokin' deal as well...

Stack the Staples coupons to bring this down. 307.99 - 40 off 150 - 25 off 75 - 25 off 75 = 212.99 + tax = ~$230. Look for the coupon codes at tech-bargains.com (without the dash) or google for staples coupons.

Can also use the same strategy with the Samsung, although I recommend that you do not pricematch with Amazon if you're planning to get it. Reason is that you want to keep total above $300 (combined total of the coupons) in order to stack them.

I already ordered the 950P from Amazon...already thought about the Staples stacking option...but using a "legal" 50 off coupon from amazon already made this monitor super cheap...plus this is a present for my father (he refuses to stop using his crappy 14") and so I need to make sure he gets this around X-mas (yes i know that amazon wont make this delivery before 25th) but around it would be nice. Plus Ive read alot that people who do the Staples CSR stacking often get their orders canceled or that they get charged a higher price...so to avoid the possible hassle I went with the Amazon deal.

But if anyone does try the 950P Staple pricematched using 4+ coupons stacked thru CSR...and GETS IT! lemme know and make me feel stupid :)

Last I checked, staples stopped the stacking thing quite some time ago.

I tried and sure enough, only 1 dollar coupon per order.
