Hi,
Please post your thoughts on this monitor if you have it. I'm particularly concerned about sharpness/focus; colour saturation/contrast, while important, is less of a consideration (as long as it's at least comparable to a good shadow mask, but I suspect it might be closer to an aperture grille display based on its 'slot' technology).

I'm currently considering the below monitors and came across the LG Flatron series (some users at CNET gave it a good rating). The value seems to be great but I'm unsure as to the quality and reliability. Anyone know how well LG has down in the past monitor-wise? Is LG really Goldstar or are they affiliated (or own) Zenith? Thanks. All opinions appreciated.

  • LG Electronics 17" FLATRON 795FT --> good value but unsure of quality/reliability
  • Sony G200 --> nice, but expensive for what you get
  • Samsung 700NF --> has had generally good reviews but was not impressed with Samsung 755/955DF displayed in store, but willing to give 700NF a chance

The 795FT is a fine monitor. I own both the 795FT and the 700NF; but hands down, the 700NF is the clear winner. This is the case because the 795FT is a shadow mask tube while the 700NF (and the sony g200) is a trinitron-type monitor. The 795FT would be better compared with the samsung 700IFT, a fellow shadow mask. Search the forums and you can see the differences of the two types of monitors are.

At school, we have Sony E200. I realy do not like them; the controls are terrible. The quality is the same except my monitor can do higher resolutions. Also, one sony breaks every 3 weeks.

By the way, LG stands for Lucky Goldstar. With the name change came a lot better engineering so dont use that as an excuse to dismiss it.

The LG once had a very excellent product - studioworks 995 invar shadow mask tube.
This new Flatron (claimed both flat inside and outside, sony and mitsubishi are not, nobody has real flat) has good and bad comments, better to see a real thing before buying.

I'd rather get a good invar shadow mask.
