Am i wrong or doesnt the speed differences start to become insignificant past a certain point?
When i went from my 2x to my 12x i shaved about 35-40 minutes off my burn time... But going from a 12x-32x saves me what a minute or two??

16x burns a whole cd in about 5-6 minutes or so.
just divide it by 2 theoretically and you'll have your numbers
shaving off work time by 2-3 minutes is actually pretty fast.

I'd be more concerned about features. I need a CDRW that overburns as well as writes raw and reads subchannel data. Good thing I was able to pick up a Lite-On 24x for $68 after rebates!

you are kinda right but also wrong...
RIGHT: yes the time difference will only be a couple of minutes, but 4-5min's VS 7-8 can add up if you burn a lot, and the new 32X might come with more RAM or other features like Better auido recording.
WRONG: you are judging recorders by time not by %. Going from 2 to 12 is 6 times better , but 12 to 32 is only 3 times better. Also don't forget 2X didn't have burnproof or 2-8megs of buffer or even ATA33.
So if you don't burn much then stick with your 12X if you burn a lot or have a older burner(or not one at all) then this might be a good time to start looking, as the 32's are coming out and the 24's should drop a little more in a month or so.
I plan on getting a Lite-On 24X from newegg in a month or so as the price should drop a little more and work well with the Lite on 16X DVD-rom I also will get.

These drives or any of the high speed ones are not true 32x they start of at ~16-20X so it should be more like 32X Max wirte speed. So going from 12x to 32x is not 3 times better.
i still use the 12x10x32 iomega i got from last year, and it works well. i wonder if these new high speed burners make a huge amount of noise. Because we all know these 32x cd reader makes these jet engine noises when it is fully spinning. if you burn at 32x for 4min straight and with that amount of noise, would you want to be next to your computer when burning a cd?

well, 4 minutes would be just the right amount of time to go to the kitchen and make some cup o' noodles, grab a drink and get back to your computer.

A lot of these faster burn speed specs are malarky...They only
burn at the listed speed over a small portion of the CD...For most
of the CD, they are burning at a much lower speed...So you won't
see anything close to the improvement you might expect based on the
rated speed.
E.g. you can burn a CD with a 12x burner in around 7 minutes, including
overhead (closing the CD, initializing the burn, etc.) These 32x burners
are talking about 4 minutes. 12/32 =! 4/7. Not even close.
I have found that all the burners past the 12x series have offered
diminishing returns...They are faster, but not even close to as fast
as their advertised speeds might make you believe. I see no compelling
reason for most people to upgrade from a 12x burner, if they have
a 12x burner they're happy with.
