LG DVD writers are decent. This one has five eggs. Some people complained that they were noisy, but then someone posted that Lite-Ons are more noisy. I can concur, Lite-Ons are noisy pieces of junk optical drives, but I've been happy with the LG drives I've installed.

Like most modern LG drives, it burns M-Disc.

i would buy this to burn cd's. cd's are still the best way to share music

I would.
Instantly enhance any system and enjoy a higher level of disc writing performance at a max speed of 24x. This increased speed lets you burn more discs in less the time, therefore allowing you to enjoy greater time management and overall efficiency.

Until publishers start selling their software pre-installed onto a USB flash drive, then yes, you will still need a DVD drive, on at least one of your computers. (Otherwise, how will you transfer the installer to a flash drive?)

good point. plus, movie dvd's are far from extinct. blueray is too expensive and doesn't look better on the TV's most people have.

+1. It's also a lot cheaper to share music and photos (or anything really) on burned DVDs than to "lend" someone a flash drive that you'll inevitably never see again.
