Lexus LFA supercar getting 550hp V10, Lotus too

This is great and all...but my excitement has gone down big time for this car after it has taken so long to materialize. It is unlikely that it will perform any better than many of the other super cars out there right now...and 550HP isn't want it used to be.

I'm actually a little more excited about what Lotus will do with it.

The time thing may because it was first shown as a prototype, it's taken only 4 years of development up until now actually. The was shown as a design prototype in 2001 or 2002 and wasn't on the amrket until the 2006 model year.

It'll probably be a great touring supercar, but being great no longer cuts it in world where it takes 600hp to hit the status quo and 700+ to get noticed.

I've hard time getting excited about any car I can't realistically afford. $50-60k is about my max budget for new/used car and this car will never hit that price point even used since it's limited production.
 
I have a hard time getting excited for a car that will likely be like driving around in a bathtub with wallpaper paste.

A lot of people here have a healthy respect for Japanese cars. It's just that most of the brands haven't had much 'exciting' for a while, outside of the 370Z and GT-R. Honda dropped the NSX, S2000, Prelude, and Integra, Toyota dropped the MR2, Supra, and the Celica (after neutering a couple of them). Mazda dropped the RX7. Mitsubishi dropped the 3000GT and made the Eclipse a bit fat slow pig.

As for this supercar, other people have rightfully mentioned that the supercar world is a bit crowded at the moment, and 550HP is barely above the rather pedestrian Z06.

If Toyota brought back a Supra, base price of $30k, with a starting ~330hp FR layout that wasn't overweight, with a couple of hot versions above that, THAT would be worth getting excited about.

Or if Nissan brought back the SX, maybe in a lightwieght ~260hp FR setup for $20k, THAT would be worth getting excited about.

As it is, the Mustang is more interesting because it's a lot more accessible, just like the excellent 370Z.

Even the 2.3L Turbo would rock so hard.

Sadly, most people buy the RX-8 only because it has a rotary.

On the contrary, I don't think people are aware it's a rotary, it certainly is not cool, but I don't think you'd base your purchase on what engine it has.

I think the rotary engine is fine, it's 1.3L but it puts out around 220 bhp. That's quite a bit for a car that size.

Sadly there's no low-rpm torque/hp, and it performs a lot worse than it would with a decent motor. It also gets atrocious fuel economy. It's sad because the RX-8 is a brilliant chassis/suspension setup, even 5 or so years on. Imagine what it could have been with say a 24V 3.0 DOHC Twin-Turbo @ 400 or so hp. Or an entry non-turbo at around 275-300hp.

Sense is right, even the MazdaSpeed3 setup would have rocked the hell out of the RX8.
 
I am sure some buy the RX8 because of its l337 rotary. Some even buy the automatic, which has its HP tailored back to speeds that are simply an embarrassment. The RX8's engine is a tragedy , which is the reason no other manufacturer has that silly tech in their engines.
