The king is dead, long live the king! Lexus? long-awaited LF-A has unofficially smashed the lap record at Germany?s Nürburgring, with a time of seven minutes, 24 seconds. That beats Porsche?s new GT2 by a second and makes the Lexus the King of the ?Ring. Company insiders have revealed that a 4.8-litre V10 ? co-developed with Yamaha ? powered the record-breaking test mule. It revs to 9,000rpm and pumps out 552bhp. Combined with a highly aerodynamic body, it should enable the LF-A to hit 210mph.

Even though there is no data on the tires/weight/etc, this car can't be far off production spec...

Holy cow. A Lexus is faster than a GT2? What a world! I wonder if this thing has their usual automatic tranny or some kind of SMG.

Have they ever posted times for an Ultima GTR or similar kit supercar in the 'ring?

/edit: research indicates that they are using a fairly liberal definition of "lap record".

Care to share your research? Why would you post that statement and then not post what you found?

so you want a car with fake exhaust tips coming out its ass?

the IS-F actually only has 2 exhausts, and the 4 "exhausts" you see are called "resonators" by Lexus, and are actually built into the rear fascia.

the same way most people would be more than happy with a C06 instead of a Z06, JC's saying he'll be more than happy with" just" an IS-F. besides, though the "resonators" aren't too hot, the car as a whole doesn't look bad. plus, what if you can't drive stick?

All-time lap record is 6:11.13 in a Porsche 956, for street-legal cars the Radical SR8 set a 6:55,, there are a couple others who beat the Lexus LF-A. Haven't found times for an Ultima, but I have found videos. Go figure.

The Lexus may hold the record for high-volume production cars, but not overall, and not for street-legal, so the article's "lap record" is too ambiguous.

Not hatin' on Lexus...just setting the record straight.

most performance cars come with the option of DSG/SMG (or automatic)

i agree, the IS-F is a good looking car. but the resonator thing seems 100% retarded. why not stick a real quad exhaust on though, especially for a car that will be $50k+?
