BMW 3 series? They are nice cars and all, but they aren't all that high end. I guess it makes sense though. Low-end luxury and cheap enough for people to buy it.

Actually, I agree as well. The 3 series is not "luxury" (nowhere close to the 5 series in that regard). Just because it's relatively expensive and "prestigious", doesn't make it a true luxury car.

The LS430 is FAR, FAR FAR MORE LUXURIOUS and comfortable than ANY CAR UNDER 150K. I can't go beyond 150K cuz i've never sat in another one or driven one. But I have been in 7 series BMW's and MANY, MANY S500's. I know about 30 people who have S500's. Believe me, the Lexus LS430 is way more luxurious and way more comfortable. The MB command system is too hard to use and not as good as lexus's navi. The seats in the Lexus are far more comfortable. With the Ultra Luxury package, the LS430 has MASSAGING AND HEATING AND COOLING seats in the front and back seats, an air conditioned soft drink compartment in the back seat, and smart key access is optional. With this feature, you don't need to unlock your doors. As soon as you walk towards your car, it 'senses' it, and automatically unlocks your doors for you, and even starts the car. The internal cabine noise is quiter in the LS430, the ride is smoother....

LUXURY = LEXUS

Yup, that also applies to lower end luxury cars. When we were looking, we looked at the C and E classes, but the slightly used E cars to fit our price range, and then a new ES330, we all found the ES330 to be nicer, smoother ride, quieter engine, and a bit more luxurious.

my mom's car is a 2000 MB E class, my father's previous car was an S500, and now he just bought a 2004 LS430. I THINK I am qualified to talk about this. Lexus will even pick up your car from your office or home, leave a loaner, do the maintenance/repairs, wash it, and bring it back to your home or office. MB DOESN'T. I DON'T know about anything lower than the Ls430, great if you can talk about it - but i can't. BTW, MB quality is going DOWN. The ML's were just pathetic (Thanks MB for makin' 'em in ALABAMA!!) Thank god my moms was made in bavaria or whatever, but the service is going downhill. It was much better 10 years ago.... sheesh...

I can pretty much sum this up from my parents society (i literally know like 30 'aunties' and 'uncle's that have the S class. for those that don't know, us "injuns" refer to our parents friends as aunties and uncles..)

The wealthy buy the S-Class.
The wealthy that are confident with themselves buy the LS430.

Audi! Sorry, I just love those cars ;)

But yeah, Lexus have a great line of cars. One thing I've noticed though, at least from Edmunds' reviews, Mercedes tend to be insanely complicated with all of their tech.

Have you experienced a new MB? Only someone hung up on prestige would buy that. The service, the resale value, the comfort, the total ownership experience SUCKS. someone hung up on prestige is not confident with themselves, hence one who buys the new s classes are not. nice logic, eh? OKAY, fine, not everyone who buys is insecure, of course, that would be impossible to prove, but i bet A LOT ARE. I have heard this from friends, "Yeah, I know the Lexus is a nicer car, but a MERCEDES IS A MERCEDES... WTF IS THAT???

...and i'm still right about the LS430 being more luxurious...

:D

EDIT: okay there is another variable: looks. my mom did buy a mb because " she liked the looks" BLEH! She regrets it now. I told her to buy a new LS (she had migrated from the LS400 coach ed. to the E CLASS)

if the 3 series is not luxury, then neither is the g35.

that convertible gifted to the MVP at the superbowl looked kinda cool... as do those Escalades with 22" Lorinsers, 15 Televisions, 4 Playstation 2's, 11 Subwoofers, and 9 switches.

edit: and don't forget the Woo Grane Steery Weel

I agree SherEPunjab that MB's quality has gone downhill. Altho I think the new E class redeemed them somewhat. The current S-class is garbage compared to its predecessor.

SherEPunjab: You have some rich uncles/aunties man! The family with the most expensive car I know is my uncle with his Infiniti QX4.

Damn you rich desis!! :p

the guys who say lexus rocks is correct. my dad has recently been looking to buy a new car around the es330 range. he looked at the acura TL, which was IMMENSELY great. very comfy and awesome for a entry level luxury car. we looked as far as g35s, benz c-classes, audi a4s etc. but lexus provided the most luxury. and by luxury i mean ride comfort, driving comfort, quiteness (i am very serious on this one, i swear the ride was almost near silent, not kidding). now performance wise, lexus obviously isnt up there with the stellar TL, or the outstanding 3 series. However, luxury wise, we were hard pressed to find any ride more luxurious and plush than the lexus.

speaking of the LS430. oh my god. that ride is heavenly. literally almost silent and tooooo smooth. given ive only ridden in BMW 7 series. comparing the current gen 7 to the ls430, the 430 was DEFINATELY more comfortable. as far as reliability/performance is concerned, id say BMW has the edge, and maybe a large advantage. but cmon now, the lexus is comfy as heck. and hell, i know some might disagree, but i think the ls430 is rather beautiful.

yeah, btw, any of those choices are fine choices. The new A4's rock, but i'm glad your dad idn't settle for the TL or A4. They are more for young professionals... not for people are parents age... imho, even though I'm a bit partial to the TL ;). Anyways, hey the Lexus is NOT any less reliable than the BMW. In fact, Lexus is usually known for its reliablity. Toyota makes some of the most reliable cars.
