So, my impression with the Lexus winter commercials is that more women buy the car for their husband than otherwise (2 versions of guys getting lexus against 1 version for women, and the assumption is that they get it for free, otherwise it won't be the "best gift ever").

I love lexus cars, but I don't get these commercials. How can a gift like that be a surprise? For a big purchase like that, aren't the husband and wife supposed to consult each other?

Not if you are stinking rich. I got my ATOT Secret Santa a Lexus IS-F. I hope he likes it.

I love how they consider it a gift. Who the hell pays for it? The person who recieves the gift. Sweet!

You can consult each other and still have it be a surprise. You can act like it's too expensive or not a good a car, or any other excuse and then buy it for him or her if you know that's really what they want.

Still a stupid idea.

I would never buy a car for a SO *after the last time I did*. Even if married. If the car is for me, then it's in my name. For her, goes in her name. Simple, effective, and doesn't pose issues if the relationship doesn't work.

Better yet, why not just surprise them by taking them to the dealership and picking out exactly what they want instead of what the SO thinks.

I concur, lame.

I got my wife a car for Christmas a few years ago, but we discussed it before hand and she test drove a bunch of vehicles and bought the one she wanted.

I would never presume to spend that kind of money on a car to "surprise" her.

Let's not overlook the fact that these commercials are designed to trigger emotional responses. It's not based on logic.

"Oh, what a great idea! I could get him a new Lexus and he'd be SO surprised! And when I tell the ladies at the club about it, they'll be simply green with envy!"

They don't want people to think about what it costs, or whether it will be the exact car he wants, or whether they can really afford it, or whether they even need one. All they want people to think about is that moment where she opens the door and shows him the car sitting there with a big red ribbon on top. And you can be sure every Lexus dealer in the country is prepared to make it happen. If some woman calls to ask how it could be pulled off, they will assure her they will take care of EVERYTHING. "That's right, ma'am, all we need to do is stop by your house at your convenience to get a couple of papers signed." They would absolutely be prepared to drive it to your house at 3 AM Christmas Eve and leave it in the driveway with the ribbon on it.

It's all relative. You might be in a doghouse if you only spent $50k.

I imagine several people probably have done that, and I wouldn't be surprised if at least two or three of them ended up breaking up their marriage because of it.

You just got me ONE Lexus? I wanted two Lexera(?): one everyday Lexus, and then an emergency backup Lexus.

(opus/opera, so Lexus/Lexera?)
