link (pretty much a press release)

The press release states that "[t]he 2GB will be Type I and expected to retail in March for $699.99. The 4GB card will be Type II and is expected to ship in the 2nd quarter for $1,499.99.

Here is the main site, it is news with some previews from a recent and big camera show. If you're interested in Digital Camera stuff check out that link or http://www.dpreview.com/ if you never have.

Also interesting is a new version of Sony's memory stick:

With 2MB and 4MB cards, professional photographers will appreciate the ability to shoot RAW and TIFF files..

Someone should READ the press release before it is released to the press... 😀

Heh just don't kill the messenger 😉

Now i'm just hoping we'll see a race towards even higher density compact flash.

I have a Canon S45 (4 Mega pixel) and I don't really care about memory size. A 256Mb card holds ~700 photos in HQ JPEG format. I could probably hold 60 TIFF's. I wouldn't store that many pics on a card anyway. I'd have to change the battery a few times to even attempt to shoot 700 pics.

But more inportant than memory size is speed. I do like the faster speed these new cards offer, but I really don't need that much memory. The faster speed cards allow pics to be shot in rapid sucession, which is very cool. 😀

I guess I'm looking at it more from the PDA/MP3 player aspect 😉
These cards could hold a lot of music, movies, and other fun stuff.

Does anyone know the theoretical limits on how much a Type 1 card can hold? Any ideas where the size will be in a few years?

Imagine the current R&D designers salivating over this kind of flash-memory density on the market and avialble for next years generation of digicams!

Take your 4 Mpixel digicam, couple it with 512 MB DDR (75$ for a big cheap internal buffer), and stick in your 4GB flash card 😀.

Can you imagine being able to take 10-100 back-to-back shots (hold the button for 20s) and then later you just look at them in thumbnail view and pick the one you want. Sure, cameras do it now but usually not more than 5 back-to-back shots. No need to worry about stopping and figuring out if you got a shot with everyone's eyes open, rest assured you do and you'll figure out later when the weekend is over.

In other words, imagine having 4Mpixel resolution movies that you can go in and pickout the individual frames you want to use as still-frame pictures without degradation? Now that would useful!!
