LEXAR 128MB JumpDrive (USB thumb drive) 49.99 AR at Officemax

This may be B&M deal only, or may be phone (someone may try)

At Officemax sunday flyer Ad, there is this 128MB USB thumb drive (LEXAR 128MB JumpDrive 20230359) for 89.99 - 20 IS = 69.99 - 20MIR = 49.99

i think something like it and love it.
Easy to move files around with network and faster than zip or etc, plug and save in win2k and XP..... cool thing

other good deal is there is a Verbatim 48XCDRW (20216375) with 49.99 - 30MIR and WD 60G HD (20076917) 99.99-30MIR = 69.99
or Belkin slim jewel case 50pk, CDR 50pk FAR.

BTW, its a USB1.1 version, the pro (USB 2.0) sell for much higher....

Same deal is also available online from buy.com here. I don't see the product at the OfficeMax website as of this morning.

I have this thumb drive, works well, but note that the "key fob" is pathetically thin plastic and will break with minimal stress. I would not advise putting it on your keyring as you could easily lose it when the fixture breaks.

Looks like a good deal for a 128mb.

One question, is it bootable!! I have a couple these thumb drives (deferent brand) and they work well except that they are not bootable even tho their manufacture claims that at least it's thumb drive smart is, which I have the 64mb version of.

My OfficeMax accepts Staples coupons so this could be a good deal.

The Lexars are the best USB drives. They are smaller than all or most others and on the fast end of the scale.

Bummer...I just ordered a Soyo 128mb USB drive from Newegg for $60. I could probably use some of these Staples coupons that I have to get the Lexar down to $39. 🙁

Two questions:

1) Will Windows XP Home or Pro recognize this as a drive, meaning are there any drivers required or is it truely plug & play?
2) Is it bootable?

Ross:

(1) WinME, Win2K, and WinXP will recognize this drive when its plugged in. AFAIK, the only OS that require drives is 98SE.

(2) I thought that all these USB drives are bootable if you MB supports it. However, after reading Hermit's post above, I can't answer this question. I have no experience with this particular drive at all.

Here's a quick and dirty review

I got this a few months back. The drive is indeed bootable (although you need to find a Win9x box to transfer the system files).

I'm not sure if it's just my system, but Win2k can't "safely" remove the drive for some reason. All other USB drives can be stopped fine. It still works but you have to be careful not to remove the drive before everything is written.

my thumb drive (not the deal here) has a switch on side that let it act as floppy disk or Hard drive, you may want to look into it.

What drive/machine do you have? The drive should have nothing to do with it being bootable. This is all controlled by the BIOS. If it supports boot on a USB storage device, this will work with all storage devices. If it doesn't, no USB storage device will be bootable.

Who's making mb's/pc's these days that are bootable via USB? Would be good to know that info before I bought my next PC.

Glad to help out, RossMAN

Hummmm....I just got an Epox Nforce2 board this past week and assumed that the "boot from USB" feature was present. The option of USB as a booting device isn't mentioned in the manual, but the manual is several months old apparently.

I don't know why I would ever need to do it, but its bugging me now, so I'll go see if that option is present in my BIOS.

Thanks for the info, unfortunately the only switch on mine is the write protect switch. I have seen some like yours on the web I might end up buying one.

My motherboard is the ECS K7S5A it supports USB HD AND USB FD booting in the bios, it also has a thumb drive for dos setting in the bios.
My thumb drive is the thumb drive smart by Trek, I had to send them a nasty email but they finally sent me instructions on how to make it bootable. Needless to say it didn't work which is why I'm interested in this one. But if you have any info or advice it would be greatly appreciated

You may have tried this but anyhow:

From DOS Doesn't "format [driveletter:] /s work?"

From windows can't you go into "my computer" select the drive and format it there?

Yo

Thanks but I can't get dos to see the drive, and Microsoft in their infinite wisdom took format /s out of XP.

ECS is nice enough to post the change info for all of their BIOS revs here. They just added this support on 1/25/02. Again, shouldn't have anything to do w/ the drive...it's all the BIOS. Can you post the instructions that Trek gave you (even though they didn't work)?

I think there is a utility available that re-introduces format /s. Maybe try driverguide.com

Yes, Give me a chance to find them, only be a few minutes.

I have their 10/02 bios installed.

Here are the instructions. The hitch was right at the beginning, never could get fdisk to see the drive.

Creating a Bootable ThumbDrive

Introduction

There are 3 primary conditions that must be met on a ThumbDrive to enable bootability.

Master Boot Record (MBR)
Active Partition
System Files

Aside from enabling support on ThumbDrive side, the host side (Computer, notebook with USB port) must satisfy the following condition

BIOS that supports booting from external USB mass storage device. E.g. Phoenix BIOS version 4 release 6.

Setting up the BIOS

On some BIOS, the boot order will directly affect whether a device is seen by fdisk. To be sure, plug in the ThumbDrive to the USB port, boot up your computer and access the BIOS to change the boot order of the computer such that the ThumbDrive is checked before the hard disk. After rebooting, run fdisk to create the primary partition on the ThumbDrive (refer to Setting up the ThumbDrive)

Setting up the ThumbDrive

Creating a MBR on the ThumbDrive

Boot a computer to DOS environment with a DOS boot disk. Run ?fdisk? and create a partition for the ThumbDrive. Be sure to confirm the target disk within fdisk (option 5) so that you do not accidentally change the partition of the computer hard disk. If you do not see ?option 5? or the ThumbDrive available within fdisk, refer to Setting up the BIOS to enable the support.

Set the partition Active.

Within ?fdisk? environment set the newly created partition to active.

Transferring System Files

Under DOS environment, run ?sys drive letter:? to transfer the system files to the ThumbDrive. Alternatively, run ?format drive letter: /s? to format and transfer the system files to the ThumbDrive.

Under Windows 98 environment, run format utility and select ?system files? under format option.

The system files cannot be transferred within Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP environment.

unless you like the lexar in particular you can find these for about the same price without a rebate...

link to 49,99 with no rebate

this is what i want tho...

128mb USB 2.0 removable drive

but like i said you could just wanting the Lexar jump drive but i think they are all pretty much the same although some require drivers where others don't. i think all require drivers for win98/98se but i could be wrong. again, i think they all do the same thing whether they are called jump drive, flash drive, pen drive drive, thumb drive, removable drive, easy drive, show drive etc.

good post none the less.
