Dear Governor,

I immigrated legally from Sweden in 1963 and have been appalled that Reagan gave amnesty to millions of illegal aliens in 1986, I was afraid that this would open the floodgates to even more illegal aliens coming here.

It's a slap in the face of immigrants who sometimes have to wait for up to ten years to emigrate to this country.

Moreover, illegals bring down the wages of Americans who are here legally.

I was a university professor for 34 years and students have told me that they are here illegally but that the university ignores their status. This translates into the taxpayers of California footing the bill to educate illegal aliens who don't pay any taxes.

However, this bill must be coupled with fines on businesses who hire illegals and if fines don't work, shut these businesses down. Many of card carrying union skilled union workers have been put out of work by illegals who take lower salaries, don't get health insurance, don't pay into the social security system, go to the hospital emergency rooms when they are sick and thus have something to do with bankrupting the health care system.

Many illegals will simply slip across the border when they commit a crime.

I had to carry my alien registration card and register with the post office for many years each and every year until that law was changed. I had nothing to hide and thus did not mind to carry my I.D. card.

In Sweden, every person has to have a personal I.D. card on him/her all the time. They also have to register with the nearest police station when they move.

Americans must carry their driver's license which is also a form of national I.D. card.

I support you wholeheartedly since the federal government has not done its job and protect our borders from illegal immigration. The entire world is appalled at the U.S. wanting to tell other countries how to govern when we can't even govern our own country.

No they don't and not it isn't.

Only if you want to drive a car legally. Also, some form of government issued photo ID is needed to purchase tobacco or alcohol products, this is most typically a drivers license.

If you get pulled over by the police while driving and you don't have your license on you, you're probably taking a ride to the police station.

I agree with her sentiments wholeheartedly. Watching these illegals bypass the system is a slap in the face to everyone who played by the rules and spent countless hours and lots of money to go through the legal process.

What irritates me even more is the sense among some illegals that they own the place. They hold rallies waving the flags of their countries and spew venom at law abiding citizens, chastising them for having the gall to <gasp> wanting to enforce the laws of the country.

Anyway, that's a good letter to write, and she should be sure to support the Governor in the next election as well.

what!? For reals?

Many places in the US require you to update your address with the DMV shortly after moving as well.

I'd imagine this is a pretty typical story from a legal immigrant. Amnesty is really a kick in the pants to people who spent a lot of time/money immigrating legally. Then there are the immigrants who joined the military to gain citizenship for themselves and their families. The families of the ones who were KIA should probably be especially upset by amnesty.

Yep. Your license is only good for something like 30 days after you move. I think most states require you to update your address. People in Tennessee have been getting busted lately for using old addresses to register their cars because they county fee is cheaper versus their new home.

Pretty much sums up how I feel about it, and mirrors what some friends of mine who were born in Norway and Argentina think.

While I'm still a little uncomfortable about the ID card issue, border and immigration enforcement need to be taken seriously by Americans and foreigners alike.

With all due respect, I dig your mom dude.

Does California really pay for university education? That is awesome if true... been trying to get our province to get the ball rolling on that for years..

Sums it up nicely.
Locally there are a ton of police reports in the newspaper every week with spanish sounding last names and all have a common theme. No operator license, driver left the scene of the accident.

The problem is the punishment is a fine and they are released and later appear in the paper the next week as failure to appear in court.

That also translated to her salary. She was the one whose bill the taxpayers were footing to educate those illegals.

It's not always good. Cheap education often means that people don't put all their mind to their study, drop out more often and move around programs too many time for it to be economically viable:

Drop-out rates
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/81-004-x/2005004/8984-eng.htm

Tuition fees by province:
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/091020/t091020b1-eng.htm

As you can see, Quebec is incredibly cheap and very bad from a drop-out rate point of view. Tuition fee is one area where I more to the right than most people. I'm all for offering lends and scholarship to promising students and never block poorer people for higher education, but education is an investment in self and should not be provided for free, else its inherent value stand reduced.

Sorry for the really OT reply however.

You dont see the difference in taxpayers paying for a teacher versus taxpayers paying for an illegal's education?
