If someone was to make a game controller that replaced the right analog stick with a small trackball would it be an improvement?

What? No. The best improvement would be to get rid of the current trend of shorter sticks, and everything becoming all mushy like a TV remote, IMO.

Also, I'd rotate the buttons clockwise a bit, as nobody I've ever seen holds their thumbs at perfect 45 degree angles.

The left analog stick is generally for aiming, and if a trackball would be superior to that, you should be taking advantage of having a PC, and use proper input devices .

I would but I enjoy using my HTPC to play emulated consoles along with games like borderlands which are somewhat controller friendly. I prefer to sit back on the couch and play these on the big screen. It would be nice to have more precise aiming on a controller.
