Are you crazy Texas has oil and California has our movies.

California by itself also has a bigger GDP (1,813,000 million) than Canada (1,432,000 million). I think Canada would be very happy going from ninth in the GDP rankings to tied for forth with China.

exactly. California is far too wealthy to give up. not like the oil in Texas is such a major income for us anyway. Alaskan oil is what, 5x that in Texas? Alaska is badass anyway. It makes sense geographically, but too valuable of a state to give up.

a worthelss state for a worthless country

Too much Cali bashing in this thread. Cali provides way too much in the way of food to the rest of the nation to give up. Plus Cali has Hollywood, Disneyland, and the entire tech sector.

Sometimes I can't wait until California falls into the ocean.

yea. me too. they will see that we dont need them like they think. in no way does cali have "the entire tech sector" and cali in no way produces enough food to make keeping their own population around worth it. Hollywood and Disneyland are hardly bargaining tools either.

too much cali bashing? seems like Michigan and the Dakotas are getting more than their fair share also.

you guys do realize that California will never "fall into the ocean," right? it will break away, thus requiring a bridge, or ferry service to get there. "Falling off" has always been improperly understood.

with the kind of seismic force we are talking about, there is probably no point to that bridge.

I can't believe that this thread has gone this long and not a single mention of Mississippi could be found.

Let's look at this from a factual angle:

>2-1 tax dollars received per tax dollar paid
#50 in education
#50 in hate crimes
#50 in median family income
#50 in % of population with HS diploma/equivalent

Aw hell.....there's way too many to list.

http://www.statemaster.com/state/MS/Bottom-Rankings

Please, oh please Canada....take Mississippi. And if you act in the next 30 minutes....we'll throw in Alabama!

Wouldn't being #50 in hate crimes be a good thing?

Meaning that of all the states listed, they have the least amount of hate crimes?
That one surprised me since I live in southern georgia and hear the hate 'speech' every day. georgia, mississippi and alabama are the bottom three % wise (in a good way). Maybe the crimes don't get reported or prosecuted or maybe it's just true in that the 'speech' doesn't get acted on. Although there was a string of black church burnings in georgia and alabama as recently as last year.

new jersey, michigan and montana are the highest % wise (in a bad way).

trivia: around here, la doesn't refer to los angeles but to lower alabama.

I agree. That's why I think some ferry system would be the way to go. Can't imagine that would be an easy strait of water to cross, either.

You have to be kidding, right?

Oil, coal, natural gas, agriculture, livestock, major manufacturing etc etc.

By the way, the states with the best economies in the United States are in the bible belt.

Uh, that's the point of my initial comment. Most people incorrectly believe that the "Big One" will sink California into the ocean. This is ludicrous.

What will happen, is that California will separate from the continental US, and ever-so-slowly drift out. It will remain intact as an island. Sure, buildings and infrastructure will topple, if that's what you mean; but this happens in earthquakes. Rebuilding also happens.

In california's case, rebuilding will take a lot longer than any single quake event.

Hmm. How about we get your west coast (California, Oregon and Washington) and we give you our East Coast (Nova Scotia, New Burnswick, PEI and Newfoundland)?

Give them all the states, or part of, that border Mexico so we don't have to worry about it.

I voted California because I live there and personally I'd rather be paid in Canadian dollars than American dollars right now. :p

I find it amusing that 27% of ATOT thinks the United States would be better off without the 6th largest economy in the world as part of their union.

West Virginia. That place is the worst shit hole in the world. I'd rather live in Israel with a permanent tattoo on my forehead that reads, "I hate Jews."

Really seriously? Agriculture.

We pay farmers not to grow corn and we impose tariffs on sugar so that we can use corn-based sweeteners instead (they cost more and taste worse than real sugar).

I'm sorry, but the corn lobby is the worst thing that has happened to the US in a long time. The Bible Belt can go straight to hell.

Fifth largest, actually

1) US
2) Japan
3) Germany
4) UK
5) California

And it accounts for over 1/8th of the entire economy of the US. That's a ton of money

for instance- dead man's curve?

That's a fun little "curve" lol. They have those damn thingamabobs on the road now though, you have to slow down to a reasonable speed.

Great idea mdoak, let's also make sure to give them all of our access rights to the great lakes. I seriously doubt water will be a valuable global commodity at any point in the next few hundred years. Just for the fishing alone and the revenue it generates I wouldn't give up Ohio. Best lake in the world for walleye or smallies, stocked trout rivers along the coast are top 10 nationally.
