Let's settle it for once and all .. AMD vs Intel (Nitemare's statistics project)

Decided to do a processor comparison for my end of year statistics project. I will be comparing AMD's current market share in the consumer desktop vs the market share with a more knowledgable computer user(here)

1. How many of each processor do you own(AMD, Intel, other(please name))?

2. Your age group (Under 21, or 21 and over)

3. Due to past experiences with processors, your next cpu purchase will likely be a (AMD/Intel/other).

I will post my analysis of the data when I have crunched it.

Thanks in advance.

they dont like these kind of threads...but I vote amd, I am 24, i would buy amd again because I have had no problems and the mobo selection is great for amd

1) I've got more Intel chips (about 8-1) but the single AMD (XP2100) crushes their collective P133-era butts. I say AMD for this.
2) Under 21
3) Next processor purchase? Motorola G4. 😛

Edit - And as long as the fanboys get in, post their stats, and GTFO without rambling on, we should survive the Mod's Wrath. If this turns into a flamefest though, expect swift and brutal justice.

  1. 2 XP1800+, 3 XP1700+, 2 XP2000+, XP1600+, XP1500+, Duron 1.0, Celeron 1.5, P3 833
  2. 21 and over
  3. AMD

Intel P4 2.0A, Intel 1.5ghz P4, Intel 700mhz Celeron

Under 21

I will buy Intel again

I've had Intels and AMD's, and the 2 AMD's I had ended up dying on me. Intels overall just seem like they are better built, with the better heat distributing and all. I don't mind spending the extra $30-40 that Intel commands for quality. Same goes for motherboards, I'll always buy the more expensive one to guarantee that I won't have any lockups for a while (Asus, ABIT, or Intel). Saving $50-100 on something that I use 30+ hours a week is dumb I think.

Edit: I forsee a flamefest. To prevent this from my comments - I don't think saving the extra money by going AMD is worth it on something I value as much as my computer. My baby deserves all the money I can spare (which is... a lot)

1. 1 XP 1800+, 2 PII 350 (one desktop, one in laptop), 1 AMD k6 150mhz
2. Under 21 (20)
3. Likely to buy Intel next, just because I have used AMD in my last 3 systems. I have no loyalty here. 🙂

Apple IIe (?), motorola 68020, motorolla 68040, Intel 486 DX66, Intel p2-400, intel p4-1600

~21

Intel.

1. 5 Amd (850, 1.33, 450, 1.47, 1.5, ?) 2 Intel (p2 350, p4-m 1.6)

2. 19

3. Amd, or Intel, best bang for the buck-

1. 1 PIII @ 1GHz, 1 Athlon @ 700, 1 P4 @ 2400.

2. Over 21

3. Whichever one fits my needs best at the time.

For systems that I currently have assembled:
Intel 486DX2/66 (router)
Cyrix PR166 (router)
AMD 233K6 (MP3 player)
AMD Athlon 850@1GHz (A/V box)
AMD AthlonXP 2000+ (main system)

Others:
Intel P133 (just got replaced by the K6)
Intel P166@200 (replaced when the 1GHz became spare)
Intel Pentium Pro 150@166 (fomerly a spare system)
Intel P3 600B (homeless)

Age: 24

Next CPU make: too early to tell. I'll let you know when I'm ready.

It's not that I don't like Intel, it's just that when I've had to upgrade AMD's been the bang for the buck leader at the time.

Edit:
The K6, P133, PPro, and P3 were all free 😀

1) Personally I currently own 2 Intel and 1 AMD - I've gotten rid of all the other computers.
2) I'm 26.
3) By far I had better experences with Intel, so assuming they are both about equal in price and performance (which at the top end they almost always are), I'd go Intel. But if for some reason AMD really broke away with a great performer at a reasonable price, I'd go AMD.

1. 3 Intel, 7 AMD
2. Over 21
3. Whatever offers the best bang for the buck.

6 AMD (Athlons and XP+)
4 Intel (older celeron, PII, P3 slot 1, one P4)

over 21

for home use i will continue to buy AMD, the higher cost of the P4 isn't worth it

--------
at work, i am working on an enterprise level purchase of AMD boxes from HP . if we can show the price/value savings to the middle layers of IT management, i think they will go for it (5000 - 10,000 PC's)

1. I have about 6 misc Intel systems and 3 AMD systems (900mhz, 1400mhz, and a duallie 2400+ digital audio workstation thats only half mine but resides at my house)

2. 21+

3. Probbably AMD just for the price/performance factor, and the amount of choices available for motherboards. If I had to build a system for a friend who wasn't tech savvy though, I would reccomend an Intel chip on an Intel motherboard, since they tend to have less issues than AMD systems.

I'm 23, currently using P4 2.53GHz
I've used AMD before and never had any problem with it.
In the future, I would probably buy AMD again just for the fact that Intel is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to expensive.
The reason I'm using intel right now is because I got a really good deal on the chip.
