Like I said, true or not... of course, if you don't know if the beginning of the story is true, why should the end be any different?

Well, I think the beginning was true. But, he never went down to the apartment to kill the spider for the girl. I'm leaning towards there being no spider in the first place, and that the girl was coming on to him. But alas, our boywonder didn't realize it or was too afraid to do anything, so he tried to duck the thread. Little did he know is that we're persistant assholes here.
