It's amazing the waste in DOD. Obviously, the big ticket items are well known . . . new weapons systems, most contracts in fact are bloated with minimal accountability. But it appears DOD is spendthrift even on things that make absolutely no sense.

1) Academy football coaches:

Paul Johnson (Navy) - $1mil

Bobby Ross (Army) - $700k

Fisher DeBerry (Air Force) - $660k/yr through 2009, guaranteed job in the athletic department after 2009, $9k/mo annuity for life after retirement

2) There's too many racing teams to count but I believe DOD has sponsorships in NASCAR, Craftsman(?), and NHRA.

3) And let's no forget the incessant commercials . . . I bet air time is cheap.

Yeah ~20 million out of the 430 billion budget. You have clearly made a dent!

Once your cost cutting measures have taken hold they wont have national exposure on the grid iron and NASCAR circuit, and TV either.

That should really help with making recruiting goals you were so concerend about in 2004-2005.

Those salaries are low based on most college programs. I would bet they make it back in the football program. (didnt look it up though)

You're right, they should not pay the coaches, they will probably work for free right? They should cut all of their commercials too, everyone already knows about the military. Now, if they did that, then less underprivaledged kids would learn that you can get a free education by joining the military. For many people, this is their way out of a life of poverty, why are you trying to hold the lower class down?

1) Most D1A football programs do not make money. Exorbitant salaries are a prime reason.

2) Most national exposure occurs with the Army/Navy game and when the academies play Notre Dame in South Bend. The coaches' salaries have ZERO impact! Granted, I hear Charlie at ND is pulling down $2.5+. The rare exception is making a bowl game. Navy has accepted a bid to some toilet bowl in Charlotte. Few will watch it in person (depending on the ACC team involved) and few will bother to watch it on ESPNU.

3) The NASCAR team isn't competitive so not much exposure to be gained. NHRA and the truck series are low tier affairs. In essence, the media value is minimal at best. Now if you are making an argument that it's a good recruiting tool b/c potential recruits are in the stands . . . why not set up a booth and give $100 to every eligible person that stops by?

4) Last I checked, the US military had its worst recruiting during the past few years. So somehow they managed to do a pretty good job in the past WITHOUT resorting to this ridiculous waste. IMO, it makes far more sense to pay recruiters MORE than waste tens of millions in boondoggles with absolutely NO guarantee of return.

5) The listed Fball salaries are NOT low compared to most D1 programs. There are 119 D1A football programs. 35 coaches make $1m+. PJ is definitely on his way somewhere else so should US taxpayers shell out $1.5 or $2.0 to get him to stay? Bobby Ross is too old to go anywhere else, so is DeBerry. The only reason the NCAA isn't putting a smackdown on coaches salaries is that they are afraid of Congress/DOJ raising anti-trust concerns.
