Let's see how much trouble I can get this quick lube oil place in... *updated*

Update 3:20pm

Just got home from the Quickstop Oilube. Would you believe it
if I told you they lied to me again? I pulled in and the worker asked me
if I needed an oil change. I told him I was in 5 days ago for an oil
change but didn't have any time to get anything else done. I
proceeded to tell him that I don't really know what I'm talking about
because I'm not a mechanic, but last week the shop had advised me to
get one of my fluids changed because it was very high and black.

The guy said "Oh, probably your transmission fluid. I can get this
car done in 5 minutes for $27.99". I said "Well, if it really needs
it then I'll go ahead and do it, but please check it out first before
you do anything." He agreed.

I waited in the lobby for about 5 minutes and he came and said "You
want us to go ahead and do it?" I said "Well, does it really need
it?" ... He answered, "Yes, it's very bad." I asked, "Can you show
me?"

He paused for a second and walked out into the garage, I followed. He
pulled out my transmission dipstick and told me that good transmission
fluid is clear, and mine is not clear. I then told him about how I
had my transmission professionally serviced a few months before and
the same shop told me that the fluid should be a reddish clear
fluid, which mine is, and I checked the level myself and it's perfect.
He just looked at me.

I kept going and told him I was very insulted that they lied to me
twice in a row. I asked him his name and position, and his managers
name. He gave me the info and I was on my way. He never apologized
or acted the least bit concerned. The owner and corporate
headquarters will be hearing from me this afternoon or tomorrow.

Original post:
1st little bit o' info: This was the first time I've had my oil changed by a business, rather than myself, in about 1.5 years. I would normally buy 5W-30 Mobil1 and a non-Fram filter from Walmart and do it myself, but it was really cold and didn't have time... Having said that...

On Friday I stopped into a local oil change place. A pretty busy one... it's newer, it's very clean, and located at a busy intersection, so it gets a lot of business. I pulled into the garage, they got me setup in the computer since this was my first time, and then they asked me to wait in the lobby.

While waiting in the lobby, one of the guys comes in and walks over to a young girl (high school age) waiting on her car and the guy was like "Ma'am, my mechanic inspected your car and he said that we really need to change your transmission fluid. We also need to change your air filter since it's extremly dirty. We can put in a new airfilter for $13.99 and change your transmission fluid for $39.99." To my surprise, she said yes to both. The oil change itself is $29.99, so she ended up paying over $80 for her service there. It answered the question that I always wondered (how do these places stay in business?).

Anyway, so I figured there is no way these guys are to pull something like this on me. But sure enough, after another 5 minutes, the guy comes out and was like "Sir, my mechanic said that we need to change your transmission fluid ASAP. The level is REALLY high and the fluid is BLACK. This is very unhealthy for your automatic transmission. I can fix this for $39.99. You also need an air filter....." yada yada. This got me worried because I just had my transmission serviced in June at a transmission shop for $100 (drop the pan, new filter, new fluid, etc). I told them no, and that I would have my mechanic (me) check the fluid later on today and I'd come back if it needed it.

Sooo, sure enough, I checked my fluid when I got home. Perfect! Perfect level, still rosy and perfectly clear.

That got me fired up that they would LIE to my face. So, today I have contact Cincinnati's largest news station, they have a reporter that does nightly stories on how to avoid ripoffs, save money, etc. Today I am going back to the oil change place, and I am going to act like I really don't know about cars and be like "Hey guys, I had my oil changed here on Friday and the guy was saying I needed some other fluid changed because it was black and too high. Trans fluid or something. Could you check it for me and see if I need it done?"

And I'm hoping they LIE to my face again so I can ask for the owner / regional managers name and contact the news station again because they want to get my findings. Hopefully they will stop lying to customers faces.

CLIFFS NOTES

1. Quick lube place told me my transmission fluid is level is dangerously high and its black, so I need to get it changed for $39.99

2. Contacted news station. Said to see if they do it again because maybe the mechanic simply got confused the first time.

3. Going back to ask them if they still think its black / too high.

4. If they lie again then I will demand some type of reparation (tons of free oil changes?) and will be contacting the reporter who covers these types of rip off stories.

Can't wait to hear how this ends. 😀

I get off work in 4 hours, so we'll see how it goes. I need to make sure I act completely ignorant of cars and transmissions, because I want them to bite. Especially since they screwed that high school girl. She is a sucker for not knowing any better, but it's rediculous that they were telling every single customer (I heard 4 total instances) that their tranny fluid needed to be changed ASAP.

Yet another story illustrating why not to go to quick lube stores.

Not really, just don't fall for their BS.
The OP didn't.

But why bother going in the first place?

It isn't exactly news many of these places pull BS like this and can't even screw the oil filter on properly.

It just seems like a waste of time to even screw with them.

Those chain stores are so full of it. That's why I change oil, air filter, cabin filter all by myself. If I dont have time, I'll go to a dealer.

$30 for an oil change? Cripes!

I know =( I had a coupon for $14.95 but (1) you had to make an appointment and (2) they said it would be a few bucks more for my car since they were out of stock on Maxima/I30 filters... so I was like Eamon, said "fvck it" and went to an instant place that charges more.

I know usually what must be done on my car. However, I don't expect the mecanics to look to lots of places unless instructed to do so by myself.
Good luck on that, hope you will succeed

Since I've gotten my Integra, I decided I'll just bring it to the dealer for oil changes, they're up front about everything. Not only that, but for $30 they vacuum the car and hand wash it as well! Not to mention you get to relax in a nice Acura dealership with tons of free food and coffee. Once the change was done, they even told me and wrote on my invoice that "my old filter was loose, and if you saw any leakage it was most likely the filter"

IMO that's great, they don't have to tell me that, they just did for peace of mind in case I was wondering about a leak. For $30 you can't beat good service, good oil, and good....um... food 😀

PS, I used to do all of my own oil changes on my Shelby Dodges, Mobil One so I was used to paying $30 for an oil change 😉

I would have been asking why they were looking at the transmission fluid when all you have paid them for is to change the engine oil.

Oh, darn, i have to use it:

Good luck with the screwage! :cookie:

Every place that does oil changes usually checks/tops off all of your fluids for you

i dont do my oil cause its just not worth my time. but i do take it to my mechanic and not a quick lube place.

the last time i did that the guy never put the oil cap back on my jeep, and when i got near my dorm the car was smoking like crazy. Open the hood oil all over.

let the car cool, drive it back to the place and i lost it. They basically offered to clean it and buy a new cap. Kicker was, all the surrounding parts places didnt have a oil cap for a 89 wrangler. So now i'm stuck at this place while he drives to the nearest chrysler dealer which is 30+ minutes away to get one.

While waiting i tell the guy to call his manager up and get him on the phone. I get the guy on the phone and he decides to come to the shop. Comes with a 90 wrangler. Gives me the oil cap and tells me he'll wait for the part. Then he gives me card for 5 free oil changes.

I traded the card to my friend for a couple of six packs, guiness of course.

Nice story. I wouldn't mind getting some free oil changes out of it, but I would mostly likely give them away because I wouldn't want them to mess with my car once I bad mouth their company 😉

Yup!

They did mine once but I figured at 80K miles, why not get new lube for hte first time.

Why not ask them, why are you checking my tranny fluid if all I asked for is an oil change? Same goes for the air filter.

Actually, I prefer the quick lube place in my town. You pull into the bay and stay in your car. They work on it from below and above (crew of 2 or 3). The first time I was waiting, they showed me my air filter "here is the condition of your air filter. It's fine, but you might want to consider changing it next time or definitely by the time after that" They don't hassle you for unnecessary repairs. Top off the washer fluid, check the other fluids, etc. The guys there are real mechanics. THey have cars in and out in between 5 and 10 minutes.

You are lucky. I wouldn't trust most of the places around here to fill my washer fuild correctly.

One thing I learned is that many places, such as Mr. Muffler and other small shops do Oil Changes, BUT if they are in a plaza with a Quicky Oil Change they are not allowed to advertise with a sign that they do oil changes. The quicky places sometimes have a clause in their lease agreement that they are the sole oil changer for that plaza.

I hope you nail these guys good man, I HATE hearing about people getting ripped off like this. Its even worse than the salespeople at Best Buy.

I have no Idea why you guys go to these cracker box franchise mechanics. In general they suck big time. Non trained mechanics, illegal aliens and HS dropouts anit touching my car.

Now I'm not saying to take it to a dealer. But an independant mechanic or independantly owned service/gas station oftern has similar prices with high levels of compitance...sometime even the owner is the mechanic...all ase+++++ certified.

Don't go for free oil changes. Go after their money. I mean would you really want them touching our car after humiliating them on the news?
