pretty nice.

fyi:
if anyone needs just a small laptop to do some word processing, slackware fun, or reading txt/pdf files take a look on *e*bgay for 'compaq contura aero'. i used to have two of them which i gave to friends, but i just bought two more off there. cost about $50-$70 total depnding on hard drive & memory (they're only 486/33's though, the 486/25's are b&w, and it's tough to find fresh batteries for them anymore).

Don't know anything about the compgeek deals, but I have a Latitude CPi and I like it a lot. Company I work for has a number of different laptop models lying around and I was really surprised at how many of them feel like total garbage when you use/carry them around for a while. This Dell is very solid, everything is nicely put together, etc. Definitely recommend it.

The real problem with this machine is the memory. I think it needs EDO -- which is kind of rare and very expensive (still!).
Since 64MB ain't gonna do it, you've gotta factor that into the price.

Actually the real problem with this deal is that you should assume the battery needs replacement. OEM (not clone) batteries are easy $100 and up sometimes. Also, no OS included.

I did a quick search on crucial.com for Dell Latitude CPi SODIMMs. 64 MB is only $39.09 but 128 MB is $302.59! I'd figure someone else has to be selling the 128MB module for about $100.

However, if you have modest needs (i.e. word processing, spreadsheet, and basic Internet apps), then Win98SE on a P2-266/64/4GB isn't so bad after all. Personally, I'd rather double my cost and get a new, up-to-date machine that could run circles around this machine. IMHO this deal does not hit the price/performance sweet spot, but it might do for somebody on a really tight budget (i.e. poor college student who needs a notebook).

I've got a friend with this laptop.. using crucial we found the ram to be very expensive for 128.. we never found it much cheaper than 300.00 so buyer beware.. there are still companies making proprietary crap and expecting us to like it.
it is a solid laptop but your going to max at 128 due to costs.. 49. for 64 megs at crucial.
I'd rather have a newer one with good sdram.

I found much better deals at Dell Auctions for stuff that had been returned to Dell off-lease.
These computers still have WARRANTIES, and most are just about 2 years old.

I got a Latitude 300mHZ PII 65MB RAM 10Gig HD 13.3' TFT for $400. With 6 months left of next day on-site warranty. Works like a charm for surfing the web and typing papers from my couch while watching TV.
