Is it just me, or does it always seem like Mueller's FOSS Patents blog is always doom and gloom towards Google? His reaction today is that the breakup fee represents desperation, and that Moto's patents won't help Google anyway.

LOL, he's a typical lawyer...

Although after reading that, I do think Google's long term goal is somewhat different than what they're saying publicly. Unless the FTC forces them to sell the handset division off or they do it voluntarily, almost immediately I think Google has something else in mind.

They could conceivably play off Android's popularity and keep the other manufacturers one step behind and grow to dominate using the Moto platform...

At this point I just want to say thanks to Pliablemoose for starting what has obviously been one of the best threads in this forum's history (I bet).

LOL, thanks.

Hope I haven't offended too many folks.

While I'm a bit pessimistic about Android remaining in it's current form, I have to admit I was wrong about Google's commitment to Android in one form or another.

If a year or 2 from now, if Android is still installed on other manufacturer's phones, and Google hasn't attempted to morph into Apple, I will be awed. I just don't see it happening though. Google is a publicly traded company and the stockholders are going to demand they do something with Moto.

I know some of you don't look at the stock thread in OT, but in the interests of full disclosure, I'm paying off my house this week with proceeds from trading Apple stock.

But I've still personally used every version of Android since 1.5 :D Although I will likely be jumping to the iP5 from my ThunderBolt when it comes out...

Heck, your arguments in this thread made me doubt my commitment to Apple. I now feel 100% that I need to give all the support I can to Android! Life is balance!

MMI enterprise value is lower than what Nortel Patents went for.
$7.27B Market cap, $3.05B in cash, and only $0.1B in debt, enterprise value of $4.3B.
That is with 3X as many patents of all sorts. Google should bid for Motorola Mobility.
They can then keep the patents and sell the handset business off to a Chinese manufacturer, like IBM sold the PC business to Lenovo.

You should be on Mad Money!

Most blogs have some kind of slant. It makes for more sensationalistic headlines and page views leading to more advertising revenue. Dressing up an otherwise boring set of facts is all part of the game.

I don't know if I'd say that Google is desperate, but I'd imagine that they certainly want the deal to go through.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/16/german-court-lifts-ban-on-some-european-samsung-galaxy-10-1-sale/

Since the ban was only for a week, and didn't affect inventory already delivered to retailers, it might not have had any affect on actual sales.

But it definitely did put "Galaxy Tab 10.1" in the headlines for a few days; a consolation prize for Samsung.

Distribution is still banned in Germany for now.

I've really turned my view around... I think Samsung really is copying some from Apple... primarily in terms of the TouchWiz App drawer, and some of the icons.. But I have a hard time thinking that is enough to warrant banning the product. I do think Sammy should probably pay some damages to Apple... and they should probably change things up a little to get out of infringement.

My guess is 70/30 chance this gets overturned Aug 25th.

My bet is they will be doing that anyway now that they've brought over Steve Kondik from Cyanogen...
