Let's play what if: AMD owned PhysX instead of NV

I was thinking about it and they missed a big opportunity with PhysX. It would not only have stopped the biggest Gameworks crippler. It also could have been optimized to use their APU effectively giving their processors an advantage in games that use it. Could of, should have, would have. How valuable do you think the PhysX IP has been for Nvidia at this point?

I would rather play what if nvidia and intel never got their grubby filthy green and blue mitts on aegia and havok respectively.
Now that would be a fun game :)

When is the last time you heard anything about PhysX? That should tell you how valuable it is.

If AMD would have purchased Agiea PhysX, I think it would have died. I think they would have not lifted a figure to generate a keystroke to program for it and it would have been just another groundbreaking technology that AMD did not follow through and support.

Also, I think the term "PhysX" is actually just part of "Gameworks" now. So, if a title has PhysX content, I think it will just be described as Gameworks. At least that is what it looks like to me.

It would have ended like the OpenPhysics project. AMD used 4-5 years to come up with nothing.

If you don't remember when the last time you heard something about PhysX was then you probably don't read a lot of gaming or game engine related material.

Just go check the list of games that's using CPU PhysX for example.

What is the latest game released that used PhysX?

Debbie Downers!
AMD prefers industry standards, open source, no funny biz!

Probably would have better uses, adoption, maybe even game changing effects. Side effects of open standards.

Say it like it is, not what the team wants to hear!

Would have been awesome if you would have just posted your opinion on the topic instead of what you think of others for having their own opinions. I refer of course to your "team" comment. Uncool.

The reference to team is not what you assume. I guess others, the crowd, the majority, etc could be used instead.

Yes open standards. Where a company can take the high ground while nobody utilizes that technology. I'll take Havok and PhysX over an open standard Physics library that never gets used any day of the week.

Anyways my belief is if AMD bought PhysX it would had been winded down like so many other businesses they have bought.

After HavokFx was side-lined by Intel, imho.

But AMD didn't and really had no substantial intention to -- based on there wasn't any comprehensive developer tools. GPU PhysX was dead for now! What a weak message to send for one's customers.

nVidia reacted by placing resources where their mouth is and purchased PhysX, innovated and improved upon these tools for their customers.

Can you give examples of businesses they bought and made no use of?

If AMD owned physx it might have ended up being used more, but honestly I am not impressed with physx right now. Maybe its because nvidia seems to suck with coding these things and making them worthwhile.

Check out that awesome physx delay. He casts a spell, a second later the physics kicks in. And the framerate is always suspect.

If AMD owned physx, it would run better.

I do think Havok is better and would have rathered that went open source and became standard. Physx is floaty weird physics, havok had always seemed more real

The biggest of course is Adreno that has helped Qualcomm make a lot of money. AMD just shut down their micro server company.

Im not seeing that delay. The spell animation looks smooth to me. The debris moving looks like that is by design. Looks like some kind of wind spell.
