Russ, how about dropping a thread into off-topic and hardware - something along the lines of 'making it easy' - could snag some new blood...

Two,

Excellent idea, but I'd like to wait a bit until a couple people try them out, in case some adjustments are recommended to the ini file.

Naw - just do what MSFT does, release it, and work the bugs out later! :D

I believe that it is better to increase the buffer size to 2000 blocks for the dialup and to 500 for the 24/7 and also add a log file.

And a small change to the setup.bat so it doesn't have to be extracted to a floppie. I think that the client will create the "cp" when it needs to.

md c:\rc5
copy dnetc.* c:\rc5
c:\rc5\dnetc -install
@echo You will now need to enter your email
@echo Go to 1. General Client Options and enter your email
@echo More help.....
pause
c:\rc5\dnetc -config

Just my 2 GR-drachmas

Russ - do be aware of what you are doing:

This is why CCalvert was debating about releasing the linux disk awhile back. he delayed it for quite some time because D.net wasn't sure about it....but since they never got back to him about it, he went for it.

I just caution you is all.....

Perhaps it would be better to have a script set up on your page to customize a .ini file based upon a users answers to certain questions? And then tell them to just copy the information into their .ini file?

Burnt -
Good point, but a simple disclaimer should be sufficient. This is a TA thing (I think there's something in there that reformats HDD's from the Netherlands... I'm not sure) "That was a joke for the more tender of the readers"

Good point nonetheless... :)

dkappos,

I thought about setting it up so it extracted to drive C:. Even had a couple versions setup that way. But, I figured if someone had multiple machines, it would be easier if they had a floppy to carry around with them.

I also thought about setting the buffer sizes higher, might take another look at that. What are some good reasons for large buffers versus smaller ones?

A dialup P3@550 (average PC now) is checking about 500 blocks /day so if it is left on during the weekend it will run out of blocks. A 24/7 P3@550 will run out of blocks after a few hours if for any reason (not very unusual) the connection is lost. In any case larger buffers don't have any dissadvantages.

Looks good Russ. My only suggestion is changing the team keyserver from teamanandtech.com to proxy.teamanandtech.com. Before too long teamanandtech.com will be on a separate machine from the pproxy.

Very neat idea Russ! :)

I have started using the 'fetch time threshold' on my RC5 machines. This is most convenient for using the same .ini for all speeds of machines, which is exactly your goal in making it generic.

Very good suggestions by bphantom and dkappos.

I have to agree with BK here, don't distributed the client with your INI files Russ. While Dnet may not go after you for it, it's definately a sign of bad faith.:(

PS Ultimately, I'd like to have a suped-up config program made in VB, or some other language that's easy to make a user-friendly prog in

WTH? Making it easier for the newbie is bad faith? Where is that coming from? Better tell ccalvert and Kilowatt to trash their disks while you're at it.

I REALLY don't get the attitude around here. Do you people want to win, or NOT?

Afraid I must agree with Russ here....

There is no attempt to subvert dnet... this is a legitimate effort to assist the new cracker. Russ's motives are pure - I'm certain he will include the latest dnet client with each successive release...

I'm applauding Russ's work - not because he's ONE, but because this solves about 84 questions for every newbie. This is great!

Kudos big guy....
