lets look at the real cost.....820 & 830 vs the 3800+ X2

AMD can try to undercut Intel's price a LOT more but why don't they? The same reason why Intel doesn't chop its processor prices waaaay below AMD's. It's because those are the prices where people will still be willing to pay for them. They both have significant markups on their products. They both want more $$$ out of you. Debating pricing is a debate on who hires better business majors, not better engineers.

well amd needs to pay it debts down, the new fabs cost money

intel essentially has a license to print money (very much like microsoft)

the funny thing is that your argument is that you dont care about performance and YET.. you are shopping for dual core cpus. Yea that makes sense.

If you really didnt care about performance and you want 64 bit well maybe you dont but look at the sempron 64s. CHEAP

Actually Frys usually has the 820D paired with a nice Gigabyte board for $349 every couple of weeks. And on the weeks they dont have that they have the 840D with an Asus P5 board for $499.

I spent less than $375 on my 820D and an Abit (AL8)board from Newegg. And it is running 840D speeds on air.

So why not save the extra cash? I used my extra money to get a better video card. It's not like I bought a Celeron 😉

OBTW, I am no moron nor fanboy! You should know that as I used to have numerous AMD systems. Then went the 2.4C rout. Tried the original AMD 64 but it was not up to par for what I was doing (I needed the HT).

and I can get a 3800+ with a top notch mSI board for 61 bucks....Where else can someone at stock get 20-30% more then stcok 820 for 61 bucks more or less....20-30% in terms of added performance often means a few upgrades of the cpus and that would cost far more then 61 bucks....

3000+ = 140 bucks and for 20-30% you would need a 3700+ to 3800+ which would run you closer to 120-180 dollars more...

Yeah I guess I could save the cash but 60 bucks for 20-30% slower?? no thanks...

This is what I like friendly disagreements....

But, nowhere have I seen 20-30% difference in bechmarks. Based on these I made a wise decision. Sure some of the games are slower but for my main purpose I'll stick with the D line and save some cash.

And these too even though this uses a 830D I am already ahead of the game.

I'm curious as to how your Pentium-D would compare here: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=28&threadid=1669076
Hyperthreading seems to give about a 15-20% boost in a lot of cases, so your dual core should get about 70-80% more.

the pentium is going to hit what 3.5-3.7 at best on air, its no where near

Not according to the techreport review. They say the 3800 is lacking in overclock abilty.

And Duvie, I supplied the 840 benches since that is where I am currently running.

I understand as long as you realise the statement I originally made was based on comparing a P-D 820 to a 3800+ both at stock, which is as the comparison poit most will try to make between the 2 cpus...I was not saying the 3800+ X2 was that compared to an 840. In actuality in most review sites I have seen it will beat an 840 in pretty much most games. The 840 often times is equal or just a notch better in multimedia.

Also realize a 3800+ will likely make it to 2.4ghz or stock 4600+ speed easily as well and then it will only hold those leads over an 840 non XE version
