I apologize for the double post. I didn't know there was one in forum issues. You have to admit that if it affects off topic, it does make a whole lot of sense to post it in off topic. If you think this thread is down there with the 'hi, I'm the world's biggest hick' threads, I'm sorry.

I post in Off Topic because I liked/like/want to like off topic. Good people. Good forum.

Just remember: that which doesn't change, dies.

That thread actually started out in OT and was moved to Forum Issues.

There is no problem with OT in general. There is, however, problems with individual members who throw a hissy fit everytime they run into something that does not fit their vision of how things should be. They're too easily offended, and wear their offense like some pathetic badge of honor.

In other words, there is a strange cult of control freaks popping up who seem quite unsatisfied with other members having any freedom at all.

If you want on topic conversations, join an on topic board that fits your interest. DO NOT come to an OFF topic board and expect people to conform to your idea of what structured conversation should be.

We officially call ourselves Commies. I'd prefer it if you used the politically correct terminology, please.

Well said. :)

I agree.

I for one, happen to like the way it's setup right now. Some serious threads, some stupid threads, and some weird ones like "Would you feel bad kicking a holographic baby?" (That one still perplexes me when I think about it.)

Nothing kills like oppression. Regulate OT to the point you seem to want to, and it will die sure as many other forums have died for the same reason.

ATOT has become worthless... where has all the good debate gone? It is really a disappointment, and a monumental waste of valuable bandwidth.

Now it is all about a few aspiring lifers neffing to up their post-counts to Ionospheric levels... all without adding any value whatsoever.

If a worthwhile thread pops up, it is ushered to the bottom by endless "What do I get for dinner?" and "I'm getting a vanilla coke! Woot!" threads...

That would help not one bit. Other forums have been ruined in the past when Off Topic was split up. We need this place just as it is.

Thank you for not flaming me.

Wait, you're agreeing with me? That's even better. Sorry. I need a minute to take this in.

Yes, yes... thank you for agreeing with me. If you weren't being sarcastic. :)

You know, the vast majority of my post count comes from political and social debate. I don't know where you're looking, but I find more than enough to debate here.

Nope, I'll disagree with that. Read my post in the Forum Issues thread for the long version of why I don't agree with it.

For the short version.
Even though this is the Off-Topic forum it is not the anarchy forum. If someone posts a thread for a serious discussion I consider it disrespectful to post one line jokes in it just to up your post count. The Off Topic forum was not started as a joke forum or a place just for people to up their post count. It was started to get non-hardware discussion out of the General Hardware forum. Posting crap in every thread just to up your post count so you can be a lifer and get your self noticed is clogging up the forum and making it impossible to hold serious discussions. There can be a balance between the two in one forum if only some people would show a little respect. Some here cannot seem to do that.

It could also be said if you want an AOL chat room then go get on AOL and chat away.

Example.
Having 6 or more people spelling out R E P O S T just to bump their post count.

Being a Nef used to be a bad thing and a bannable offense. It still should be.

Honestly, I don't think that anything is wrong with ATOT at the moment. It has a good mix of serious and light-hearted topics, and most of the posters are fairly well behaved.

Sure, some certain post topics get out of hand (like the steady stream of the "I just drag raced with somebody!" and "Let's flirt with the female Anandtech member!" posts), but the mods do a decent job of keeping the forum from turning into a big AOL chat room.

I'm with AmusedOne on this. If you split it up, your gona kill OT. I can guarantee that most of the members will not be here in 6 months. The Community changes all the time. The few that stay keep some of the tradition/old memories alive. The forum reflects on the kind members we have here. Try to control them, and this place will be dead with in months.

Then punish those individual offenders. And don't do so arbitrarily.

But don't punish everyone for the actions of the few by passing arbitrary rules that stiffle free expression. Not everyone is going to be serious. Get over it.

Meanwhile, I resent the implication that lifers only get there by neffing. As I've already pointed out, the vast majority of my posts are serious political and social debate, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've pointed out a repost.

OFF TOPIC........A public meeting place, a Pub, if you will... A place for computer junkies to boldly post Off Topic... Things you might want to tell everyone... Or things you wouldn't say to anyone else.

This would be the headline for ATOT from the forum main page. The word "pub" is used. If one enters a pub you will hear conversation ranging from the serious topical discussion to...well...you know. I would say ATOT functions as advertised.

I think this forum has more rules than a union job already, but, so what. Its an internet forum. It matters not in the grand scheme. If it dried up and blew away it wouldn't matter.

I would agree with those advocating the post count numbers be flushed. The whiners whose sexuality is tied to their status would cry though.

Amused -

Your posts are actually quite good. They are well composed, and add value. :)

There are some good debate threads that are here - but they are far outnumbered by meaningless crap. Not long ago, I would waste hours of my employer's time posting in heated debates with Czar, Elledan, Texbastard ;), Moonbeam, and others...

There was no shortage of topics... there were very few nef threads... One could actually have a sustained discussion.

The problem with the meaningless crap posted for the sole effort of raising post cout is that it relegates the meaningful stuff worthy of a response to the murky depths, sometimes never to rise again. That is a real shame, and it is a far cry from what it used to be before being overrun by AOL chatroom refugees...

how about make it like HT, "Check your egoes at the door folks..."

and put a rule that every post must be centrist...not liberal or conservative???

I like it the way it is now too.

The quoting thing is getting a little annoying, and the threads that turn into bitchslapping, own3d, you suck, you swallow, your mother swallowed are, ya know, the kind of stuff that should be PM'd because the only people really cracking up at that are the few who do it.

But I still like this place.
