Windows xp pro sp2 (I KNOW) 3.4g p4 abit ic7 3com 3c509tx nic linksys befsr41 router
dual boot 2 xp pros, one is for work other is for fun
c(is fun partition with sp2) and d partition(work setup sp1)

ok here is what I did
I picked up a 200G seagate drive on hot deals for $59 and a friend traded me an audigy2zs so this weekend I decided to do everything to my system....but instead I made a mess or was it me???
on my c xp sp2 I removed my audigy2 drivers and replaced the card with the new 2 zs, installed the drivers and just the soundcard setup interface all on my c partition.
rebooted and it work fine (did not try the network)
I moved over the files with seagate mover...worked fine
removed the old junker drive and put in the new drive with the os's on it.

booted fine and off I go...everything is looking great.
let me go to the internet and check some stuff.
NOTHING
I look and I am 169.254
oh no...wait maybe I forgot to plug in the cable...nope thats not it.
after about an hr or looking at everything I reboot again and boot into the old (work partition d), I had not installed the soundcard drivers or service pack2...it connected to the internet fine. SO its not hardware.

I have tried everything I can think of and can not get this thing back on the network.
Is there something that the audigy drivers could have done to mess up my system like this?
Yep should do one thing at a time I know..or should have followed that idea

ANYTHING from anyone is very welcome

thanks big time for any ideas

Just to make sure I understood your post correclty:

  1. You had 1 HD with 2 partitions. Both with XP installs; one for work, without SP2 and one for play, that had SP2. (C: was fun, D: was work).
  1. You replaced your sound card; everything seemed to be fine.
  1. You then installed a new HD and did an exact copy of the old HD to the new one (keeping partitions in tact as they were).
  1. Now you can't get the internet on C:, but you can on D:

Well, if that's all the case, lets start with the easiest first. Did you screw with your network drivers on C? Can you try to reinstall them? How do you get the internet? Does your computer use DHCP to get an ip address?

If you use a cable modem/DSL/LAN that gives you DHCP normally, what happens if you manually enter IP address/DNS/Gateway info? Can you reach the internet then?

ok I am going thru a linksys befsr41 to a dsl modem and then to the internet.
I get my ip from the dhcp on the router. or did
nothing but change out the card on the c install. I didn't even think about installing
it on d untill I was moving the files, I have not used d in 3 months.
I thought about it and said too late I will do them later.

so C worked with xp pro with sp2. everything worked fine.
uninstalled the soundcard and drivers.
installed the new soundcard and drivers.
plugged in the new drive, used the seagate software to move it all over.
rebooted on new drive, booted fine but no ip. can't get an IP.
I guess I could give it 192.168.100.1 (I think the router uses that for first computer)
so default gateway will be 192.168.100.0 for the router addy ???(not sure if thats correct)
then it should get to the net?

but this is a patch and does not explain why the thing lost all connectivity.
Creative screwed it up ?

or was the sp2 patch just lucky to work and anything was going to cause it to fail ???

ps I took a ghost image I had from last month...XP with sp1. installed the creative card, software
and then installed sp2 and it works???????????????????????
but I lost all the stuff I did in the last month.
and if its just waiting to fail anyway...all of this has been a waste of time and it could go south at any time.
NOT SURE about the last statement.

is this something MS screwed up, after reading about all the wireless people who got messed, and I should uninstall sp2 until they get their head out of it.
