But her friend said that wasn't right because they HAVE to clean themselves.....

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about the animal's health. The cat will clean itself whenever the owner isn't around. Pets will do what they feel is necessary whenever the owners aren't around, even if they get scolded when the owners are there for doing the same thing.
That's something one will never stop a cat or dog from doing. They'll find a way.

Unless she wants her cats to get infections in their anal sacs....which are way more gross to manually clean, smell and can leave messy surprises when they get up from sitting, she's best advised to leave the cats to their business.

But yeah, they'll certainly take care of it when she's not around.
