The new MBPs are too rich for my blood, but on the upside, the MBA refresh + price drop puts the old MBA in an attractive price point. Apple has the old base 13" MBA refurbed for $929 + tax.

First impressions of iOS6 Beta:

Siri - updates are nice, the ability to open apps is useful.
Do not disturb feature - doesn't appear to work at all (Beta, I know but I was really looking forward to using this at night).
Maps - Look nice and seem to load quickly. Will test turn-by-turn when I leave work.

OS overall seems very responsive. No crashes or other oddities in limited use so far.

Yay, 8GB RAM in an Air. If my DIY Chromebook doesn't hold up, I think I'm going after that puppy :awe:

I wouldn't call that updated. If anything, I think it's very telling about Apple that they think their current hardware releases in the iMac/MacPro side are more than sufficient for another year.

All in all, I'm very dissappointed in iOS 6. I'm happy Apple is going to allow FaceTime over cellular, as thats one of the two reasons I jailbroke, but there was nothing on Quick Reply with regards to SMS. Nothing on 3rd party notification center integration (except for Facebook and Twitter).

I've been using this thing since 2008 and I'm ready for a change. The annoying thing is that I just don't think it's a whole lot greener on the other side of the fence. So I'll likely buy an iPhone this fall once they're jailbroken so I can install biteSMS.

Are they making it so you can talk with facetime over celluar before then or when it launches?

Thanks
When it launches I believe.

Apparently Tim has said that he cares about the Pro customers and that he has something great in store for the Mac Pro in 2013. Thank goodness.

Meanwhile the current Mac Pros don't even have USB 3 or Thunderbolt, and can't even run Apple's own monitors. Pretty lame.

I mean, it's a pretty significant upgrade, processor-wise for the price, but there's a lot that should have been addressed.

I'm guessing their whole line of desktops will get refreshed before too long, perhaps even as soon as the ML launch. iMac never skips a year. Would be kind of nuts for them to literally redo their entire PC lineup at once...even apple has limitations.

For the most valuable tech company in the world with $100b cash in the bank, keeping up with the Joneses shouldn't be "nuts" for them.

They do everything for a reason, methodically. There's a reason they didn't update iMacs, Mac Minis and Mac Pros; there's also a reason they axed the MBP17.

Couldn't that reason be as simple as reserving production capacity for the relaunch of their best selling PC product (laptops)? They'll be struggling to pump them out as fast as they can for weeks, it certainly wouldn't help if they had the extra burden of a rush of new desktops. IIRC the iMac and macbook pro weren't refreshed at the same time last year either. If by july/aug we see no new desktops, something is amiss, but I see no reason to panic.

I expect the iMac hasn't been updated because they're unable to get good enough yields of 3840x2160 21.5 inch and 5120x2880 27 inch displays, I expect to see them in a couple of months though. And I expect that the TBD will be released as "retina" as well at the same time.

The Mac Mini... I'm not sure. The Mac Pro? The tech they want isn't ready yet and they're not going to update it again in six months or a year so they're waiting.

It took 2 years to go from a Retina iPhone display to a Retina iPad display. We may be waiting a while for a Retina iMac and Thunderbolt display. However, the hardware limitations of GPUs limit the 27" display to 3840x2160 because of DisplayPort 1.2 standards. GPUs also aren't rated for anything higher than 4K. Perhaps Apple could whip up a special display and GPU, but then pretty much only the iMac and Mac Pro could use it, which is too limiting and leaves out laptops.

Yeah but that's very different from this scenario. The iPad needed more powerful hardware and much better battery life to handle the higher resolution, which isn't a factor at all with the iMac.

Sharp already has 3840x2160 IGZO displays ready, and I expect they'll be able to get 5120x2880 on a 27 inch panel too. That's why I think there was a delay here.

Dual Mini DisplayPort should be able to handle 5120x2880 fine though. And some of the higher end AMD Radeon HD 7000 series support 7680x4320.

And if they just were going to let the current design slide for another year, they'd have at least done a minor spec bump like they did to the pro. Something is in the works, and some form of retina display seems a given. GPU isn't an issue at all, these are desktops we're talking about. They don't necessarily have to carry over the same sizes and base resolution, so who knows what we'll see. They've got a few months until its back to school time.

I'd be happy with an Ivy iMac. The screen doesn't matter for the delay of the Mac Pro. Kind of hard to drop 1600+ on a 2400 Sandy Bridge.

The reason is because they are going for a more drastic redesign of their desktop lineup.

The new iMacs are going to be drastically thinner, with a more TV-appliance feel. In fact, I see no reason why the iMac and rumored Apple Television can't be merged into one product line. Take a wafer-thin LED display, insert MBA guts into the base, and you've got a "smart TV"/desktop. Axe the 21.5" model completely, start them at 27" and go up from there.

The Mac Mini and Mac Pro make up such a small segment of Apple's sales, I'm wondering if they'll either axe them completely, or unify their standalone desktop lineup to one device.

I think the iMac will the Retina display, same thin screen design as retina MacBook Pro to decrease glare, etc.

No way! Firstly that would gimp the iMac line and no one would buy it as a desktop anymore, and secondly 27 inches is way too small for an HDTV.

Tim's confirmed that a 2013 Mac Pro is coming, and I expect the Mac Mini will be updated alongside the iMac.
