As usual I will swallow my outrage at a country where not tipping is considered some sort of moral crime and agree with everyone else.

Tsk tsk tsk.

Sure it does, so maybe it's just a culture difference. With tips, good wait staff can earn pretty solid money considering. Bad wait staff presumably get less or no tips so they make barely minimum wage. So there's a pretty big reason to do your job well. If we changed to a zero tip type of pay structure I would expect to see a lot shittier service on average because it doesn't affect that person if they do well or not. It might be different if tipping was never part of this society, but since it already is I think taking it away would be a huge misstep.

My very limited overseas experience is just the opposite. In countries where there is no tipping, I had better service than I often get in the USA.

not sure if serious...

the customer wrote the message on the tip line. that message at the bottom of the note was written by the waitress.

edit: i obviously didn't read the article first, but the way i understood it makes more sense to me. oh well.

I thought so at first too, but even without reading the article why would the waitress write "it was great"?

"I wish everyone could work one week as a server and then try to tell me it's not hard. The better you are at it, the easier it becomes, but it can still be very tough. Mentally and physically exhausting. And the fact is, we make $2.13 an hour," explained PhoenixSongFawkes. "If restaurants ever did change to just minimum wage, good servers would be hard to find. Because no one would work like that and put up with that for minimum wage."

I want to point out that particular piece from the article.

So what this hypocrite is saying is that with tips, they make far more than minimum wage, which is $7.25/hr, possibly higher depending on state laws?

I guess I need to start tipping less from now on, since these people are obviously making too much given these are, by definition, minimum wage jobs.

Of course it will effect the worker if they do their job well or not; they'll get the sack if they don't, same as what happens in any other industry.

You don't need tips in order to enforce decent service, and the level of service is influenced more by the type of establishment than anything else.

Low-class restaurants will have lower standards service, whilst the higher end ones will have better service.

I wouldn't wait tables for twice minimum wage. It's ass busting work, and you spend your whole time dealing with mouth breathers that have an entitlement complex. If there was a job from hell, waiting tables would be pretty close. We're lucky someone's willing to do it. I'd rather operate a shit truck, and clean port a pots.

If you deliberately waste 10 minutes to bring me water, you will not get a tip. Which is ironic given all the whining you do about not getting a tip. I can survive without that one glass, can you survive on half minimum wage?

What We Want You to Know
In many restaurants, the tips are pooled, so if you have a bad experience with the server, you’re stiffing the bartender who made your drinks, the water boy who poured your water, sometimes the hostess, the food runners, and maybe the other waiters.

Well then, maybe you shouldn't disappoint all those other people you pool tips with by being lazy. Peer pressure's a bitch.

Exactly, if my pay was directly scaled to someone elses performance, you better believe I'd be checking on them regularly.

If true, and if I owned the restaurant, she'd have a lifetime ban. I have no use for people like that, or their money.

And how exactly would you enforce that, genius

ID everyone who comes into the restaurant and cross reference your banned list?

Its funny because this has always been a hot topic on ATOT. I worked as a waiter and I used to be very pro tipping. Not so much as I've gotten older.

Even though everyone argues for tipping on this forum, my stance has gone the other way. I think its because everyone has such strong opinions on it. Yea, sure I was a waiter, and then I got a better job. If you need tips to survive, get a better job

Her picture would be at the hostess station, and if she came in, and was recognized, she'd be escorted out. It isn't foolproof, but it's close enough. Genius...

I will tip 15% as long as you do what is required, once though i went to a pizza place that had appetizers and one of the appetizers was a fancy term that ment it was a salad, I did not know what the word ment and I asked the server what it was and she gave me this horrid look like "OMG, really" rolled her eyes then when I asked about it trying to compare it to something I was familiar with she said "umm.. no not really." So, I did not tip her a dime, she didn't even provide anything beyond the minimal service, I wrote in the tip line "Learn to be more friendly." She was a total young snob and I doubt she has that job for very long, I have yet to go back to that place due to her service, which is a shame because the pizza is pretty good.

Right....

Because in a world where everyone is getting their wages cut, bonuses cut, etc. You should only do your job, and do it well, if you're congratulated for it.

Thats a nice idea. I know I would care more about my like of work if they didn't take a week of my vacation away, or gave me bonuses based on my production and whatever. But instead I sit on here and I'm talking on this forum, right now instead of working.

Your point exactly? Except the rest of America has to deal with it in these economic times. Most of us are thankful we have jobs. They should as well or they should seek out a better fucking job, simple as that. Tipping shouldn't be a requirement and thats why it isn't. And it never will be. So people like this will exist, and they won't tip, and you people will cry about it on this forum and say ridiculous things like lxskllr said

A lot of people don't tip. Anyone in the service industry will tell you that, its something you live with if you choose that profession.

Especially after you have 100, 200, 300 pictures for them to look through having banned them all.

That will work well for you.

Or not, since any restaurant you start would fail before gaining that many patrons :p

Most of them run the place or are relatives of the owner or bonded labors who don't get to keep it anyways, so it does not matter to them.

If there were that many cheap fucks, I wouldn't be in the restaurant business. It's the excuse she gave I have a problem with. $20 at Dennys? I might accept the single mom bullshit. When you drop $140 on food, that excuse doesn't fly anymore.
