EDIT

Well, I bought an x3350 which is the same thing as the q9450
along with a DFI x48 T2R
8GB G.SKILL 800Mhz

I'll add the rest of my rig, including an 8800GT and 3 raptor RAID 0

DDR3 is too expensive....I would stick with DDR2 since I already have all I need of it....

What chipset are you thinking about. I have partial to Gigabyte of late, but I been looking at P35 boards more so.

DDR3 will become a good idea in about a year, when it's priced somewhere near DDR2. Until then, all you need for a Q9450 is $110 worth of 2x2 GB PC8000.

Word. The real-world performance delta between low-end and high-end DDR2 isn't even something to write home about, let alone the incrementally small performance jump in going to DDR3. You are far better off investing the money in good GPU and anything that helps clock your CPU higher (HSF, watercool, good mobo, high clocking DDR2 just for FSB support, etc).

i have a 9450..and a gigabyte p35 ds4..wouldn't boot, even with the latest bios..ended up getting an abit ip35 pro..they come with bios 14, which will not boot the 9450..but they have 2 beta bioses (16 b04 and 16 b09) either will boot and run the 9450 fine..

hey gents..running 8 x 426-3408 at 1.25 volts currently. gskill 4 gigs ram 8500 @ 4-4-41- timings. can't check temps cause of the mucked up sensors..they vary from 210 in the bios, to 126C in coretemp to 221 in speedfan to -30 C in everest:)

no, i didn't get the chance to run in that gigabyte board..just the p35 ds4 rev. 2.0. tried bios versions f8 through f11..no dice to boot the quad penryn:) i love gigabyte boards..but, what ya gonna do?:)

once abit puts out a more mature bios, i'll try to crank it up to 500..i think my best stable was about 8 x 455 or something like that (3.6 and change) 7.5 x 473 or 3547 was stable at that multi from what i recall but dead in it's tracks no matter what i did after that. that was with the voltage at 1.35 in bios, 1.32 in cpu-z

You know anything about this temp issue? BIOS update supposed to fix it or ...?

i got the q9450 from a friend in montreal ES B1 stepping sample. the various theories on the temp issue to date include:

-processors run too cold at idle to be read properly by sensors (i don't buy that..they won't be "that" different..and even if they were, when i load my cores up, the temp simply does not change in any software or the bios)

-stuck sensors- interesting theory given as per above..the temps don't change. i prefer to believe the sensors are reading "something" but don't know how to properly interpret.

-65nm processor sensors used at least in early batches of penryns that needs to be corrected by intel- intel cheaps out and doesn't use a proper sensor designed for the chip..interesting and plausible to me.

-immature bioses for penryns- also plausible to me..given that the gigabyte p35 at least relative to 9000 series quads, won't even boot and that abit doesn't have an official bios to support the 9000 series on the p35 boards anyway.

the greatest concern i have for myself anyway, is that this is an intel problem that can't be bios corrected no matter what is done (for early release quads and 8400s..my quad's a B1 stepping so i maybe SOL on that one:))

the other interesting theory is that the penryns were never really meant to be run on the p35 chipset boards..x38 was really supposed to be the first board they were used on, but given delays on those and impending slow sales, they were pushed to make the p35 chipset boards compatible..not my theory..just what i read...there is something weird going on for sure given that the penryn quads are days away from release in the retail stream, yet we have many mobos that claim to be penryn quad compatible..that don't have a properly functioning bios in all regards..never mind quads..there's tons of people reporting the issue of 8400 temp errors with their mobos from various manufacturers.

finally... Now I wouldn't be considered a dual core fanatic for always recommending the E8400 over the Q6600...
Now I can go back to saying "for encoding and blah blah get a quad core, for most other uses get a dual".

Hot dang -- you can buy DDR2 2gb sticks for ~$50 O_O

At this rate I'll prob put 8GB on mine.

Still, what mobo are you folks thinking about using?

I'm guessing the ASUS P5E3 Premium will be the one to get

A few places have posted pre-order links, estmating the last week of March. Roughly US$350 for sale prices, so it'll take a while for them to drop down to Q6600 prices and truly replace them in the market.

I got the impression that they start coming in to a shop near me (during and) after next week.. so there surely is some variance in estimates. If the shop near me is correct, then it will be interesting to see if Anandtech reviews Q9450 during next week.

i think that's exactly on the mark..they serve different purposes..if i was a a serious serious overclocking guy, i wouldn't be buying a penryn, dollar for dollar:)

Waiting on one of these too.
Everything I have read said late March.
Price is expected to be $316 per 1000, and retail should be @ $350 to $400.

I'm hoping for it to settle more in the $330 to $350 price range (from $316).
Pretty much like the Q6600 settling in the $270 to $280 price range (from $266).

The question is wheather or not retailers will actually price them that way :D

You can bet pricing will be in the upper $300 range after the 1st batch of CPUs sell out.
I'm gonna camp newegg when it's time.

No, I believe the Q9300 is supposed to take the current pricing spot of the Q6600 at around $266. The Q6600 is supposed to officially drop in price in April to $225.
