Let the map war begin... Apple vs Google

Next week, Apple is widely expected to drop Google as the maps provider for the iPhone and iPad.........
Apple has purchased three mapping startups, and it has reportedly been combining their technology into a maps application that, in the words of one Apple insider who spoke to All Things D, “will blow your head off.”

Google Maps Is About To Get Even More Awesome - On Wednesday, Google invited tech journalists to an event in San Francisco that was meant to show that it is not concerned at all, no way, no how. Several executives took the stage to explain the technical feats that Google performs to build its maps. They also unveiled a few upcoming features, including a system that creates beautiful 3-D images of all the buildings in the world’s major metropolises, as well as a way to access Google Maps when you’re not online. The Googlers were all very cordial and friendly, and when baited by journalists into commenting on Apple’s plans they declined to take any shots at their rival.

In some ways its good, we need more advanced and better stuff with the maps... Google is going great things but there is no competition... Microsoft is just trying to keep up with them... Although as you wont be able to us the iMap unless you won iFails, it is a downer... but still will be interesting!

my sincere apologies if R, Mods please merge is R

I believe it wont be the default map app in iFails, and might be removed from App store too... but it will work on the Safari and mobile browsers of iFails..

lol @ apple.

i dont get this direction, for the untold millions if not billions google has sunk into its mapping over the decase, i dont see what the point is to even try to compete or offer something "new". as a consumer i know google maps and like it.

they keep adding features that really dont help, all people rally need to know if how to get from A to B and and the ap work quickly

Google Maps on IOS isn't on par with the Android version, and it looks like Google is not going to address that anytime soon. If it provides a better service than what Google Maps currently does, then it makes perfect sense. Offline maps, turn by tun navigation, etc, would be welcome additions.

Yeah, all I really want is for changes to be implemented more quickly. I remember after the 35W bridge collapsed in Minneapolis, it took Google several months to update their maps so it wouldn't route you through there, and several more months after the new bridge was built before they added it back in. Yes I filed reports both times, and I'm sure tons of other people did too. Mapquest was the fastest to respond to the changes, then Bing, and Google took the longest.

Similarly, an overpass was constructed near my office back in 2009. Wasn't added to the maps for over a year, and only in the last few months did they update the aerial photographs to include it. I guess I understand that it can take a while to update aerial photos, but at least fix the maps themselves in a timely fashion. Again, Google was the last to add the overpass; Bing was faster again.

Also, I've noticed Bing gives more accurate travel times, although Google is a more user friendly interface (they're very similar though).

I'm sure apple will just ask for an injunction to have google maps blocked based on patent infringement.

Well, obviously, since Apple invented mapping software.

Apple develops the Google Maps iOS app. They just use Google as the map provider. So they have no one to blame but themselves if their include map app isn't up to snuff. Changing providers and releasing a much improved app at the same time is really just a publicity stunt to make Google look bad.

the following statement cannot be said enough:
GOOGLE DID NOT WRITE THE IOS MAP APP.
APPLE WROTE THE APP. IT JUST USES GOOGLE MAP SERVICES.

Apple kept it gimped for ages.

I applaud Apple taking on Google, but I WANT the option to use either or. Google just has a lot more built up already.

What the hell else do you need in a map app? I barely use them to begin with, but just show me A to B and I'm fine.

Yeah...I prefer Android as well, but you've got to be on crack if you're that unwilling to acknowledge the incredible success and slick, user-friendly interface of the iPhone.

If going from $10 a share to almost $600 a share in less than 10 years is fail, then I don't want to hear your definition of success.

You sir are an oracle, what you say shall surely come to pass when the intelligent folks at the patent office give Apple generic digital mapping patents for based on their new product. Prior art, what dat.

Who cares how much money the company makes or if the world is full of dumb people, I have Galaxy S II and iPhone 4 (!S) both and I rarely use iPhone, the swipe alone make Galaxy much superior and I personally HATE stuff that I cant customize. App store sucks Jupiter's dong, nothing's free and free stuff has annoying ads (compared to same apps on Android). To me it seems like a much older and dumber piece of junk, one example, the options menu eating up precious screen space, hide it like Android does, I will bring it up when I need. Only good thing is its battery life.

But we are not here to discuss iFails, are we?

Bing maps is superior to Google maps so I don't care. Google is going to lose though, people don't worship at the Google alter like they do the Apple Alter.

I thought the issue with turn-by-turn directions was that the map data wasn't licensed for that?

You're wasting your time trying to argue with someone whose opinions are based on religious fanaticism.

I stand corrected in reference to Google writing the app. One of the things that seem to drive this is money, not just spite. So there is potential lost revenue with mobile ads and search. Also, it appears Apple cannot pass the map tiles to other apps due to licensing. Google most likely doesn't charge itself anything to use all the functionality they have, which would always give Android an advantage versus a competitor using Google's map services.

In any event, Apple is apparently doing something about it now, and have been planning it for awhile. Which is good.

Tongue in cheek based on them blocking the HTC line of phones last month, and yesterday a suit to block the Galaxy S3 from being imported.

Hmm, that could have something to do with it. Wasn't aware of that but I (may) stand corrected on that.

Yeah it makes sense for Apple to split off from Google in as many ways as possible. Probably the only areas where Google is so entrenched that Apple can't afford not to integrate their services are search and Gmail. But there's nothing tying users to Google's map service vs. anyone else's, so they may as well go with someone else.

Here's what will happen. Apple will launch iMaps, with a feature set to what Google Maps had a year or so ago. Then, they will sue Motorola, HTC, and Samsung for patent infringement for using 'an application to provide navigational services on a latitude & longitudinal grid with known geographical locations.'
