AIM sucks.

MSN owns.

ICQ is somewhere in the middle.

msn is awful- every window takes up huge amounts of screen real estate. its all about aim with aimutation.

I leave it connected since I use Trillian, but the only people I have on my list are international students that I'm friends with, lol.

I think AOL actually owns ICQ now. Which is why I wondered why it took so long for the privacy mode feature to show up. One thing ICQ still has that AIM doesn't is the ability to put people on a list to see you in private mode. And it doesn't show online time, so if you block people then unblock them later, they're not any smarter.

Plus I miss the old ICQ-style chats. And the sound effects. And the fact that if you had ICQ, you had to know something about gaming and/or computers, and that's the only reason you had it. Plus all the different statuses, and everything else. I really did like ICQ. I remember thinking how much AIM sucked when I started running both at once. Back then AIM was at version 2.x so there's no doubt it was much more compact than today's version.

I used to have a 6 digit ICQ # but I forgot it...let alone how to search for it.

I remember powwow. that was back in the FreeTel days.

wtf, I've used it since 1996, and mine is 15748602.
I personally like ICQ more than any other messenger, because it has the largest userbase worldwide(well when it did), since AIM is just America only.
ICQ has the whitepages thingy where you can search for people by ASL and interests. That's a keeper.

ICQ -> IM spam
AIM -> No IM spam

I switched to AIM.

Too true.

:confused: I've never received spam via ICQ.

same...
ever, once, in my entire life

i didn't even know there was such a thing

but it could be because i always enable the things like, no messages are allowed to be sent to me from people outside my list.

just enable that and you will never receive spam..

switching from one IM to anther over a setting change is hilarious :D

But I don't have to do that with AIM. Sometimes there are people outside my buddy list, say when my friends get new screennames, etc.

they can ask for authorization if you are adding a new contact, just not send you an actual message.
oh well i liked ICQ.

i didn't care if i never got those messages, too bad for the friends ;)

if you want to meet friends online i guess that's cool, but I only use AIM to talk to friends I know from my life.

I've had better luck with Miranda-Im for Icq, assuming you're in windows. There's a million cool plugins for it too. Heck you can even have a little window pop up when somebody reads your away message in icq. Unfortunately its AIM support is pretty bare. My only gripe about gaim is that I hate the away message system, and I can't read older icq versions' away messages.

I guess if you prefer aim, gaim is better for you. If you prefer icq, miranda is better. They're about the same for msn.
